  1. Moving to Bellevue, WA and looking for a room to rent

I will be accepting a daytime job in downtown Bellevue and I am looking for a place to rent. At minimum I need a room and kitchen access. I will be on my own, but my wife will be out to visit...

Re: Epoxy resin to strengthen the gantry

Couldn't you hire the best welder in town (to make a nice steel frame) for the money you're putting in the extrusion and epoxy?

Re: DIY Spot Welder Build and resources

Very nice Mike. I've had a spot welder on the to-do list for some time. So far I've been holding out for a 5kVA transformer, maybe I should go for a microwave. Yours does a nice job.

    Re: Engraving lines from image

I set up LibreCAD and drew the basic figure. This imports (as a dxf) into F-engrave with no problems.

    Engraving lines from image

I have a drawing in Sketchup which consists of a fairly simple set of straight lines. I can export it as a bmp (free version).
When I import it into F-engrave, set for engraving, the single lines...
  7. Re: ARTCAM or VARVE...Which Do You Prefer and Why

F-engrave works pretty nicely for v-carving. It is also free--at minimum you can learn what features are important before looking for software that has them.

Re: PEM Fuel cell H20 = electricity

I don't know much about fuel cells, but I'm pretty sure they are both expensive and fragile. I admit the idea of making your own is interesting. A hydrogen flame is not visible, take note.

  9. Re: DIY Vacuum Table, with T-nuts/Inserts???

    Two details:
I connected my shop vac hose to the PVC by adding a layer of EPDM to the inside diameter of the PVC. The hose end is tapered, this thickness made a match.
    Watch the EPDM and avoid...
  10. Re: DIY Vacuum Table, with T-nuts/Inserts???

It's cheap to try something crude but effective, admittedly I did this on a smaller scale.
I started with a continuous surface spoil board--MDO plywood, no T nuts. I installed a PVC shower drain in...

Re: Gast Vane pump... vacuum hold down

Until I can afford a vacuum pump I'm using my shop vac. It works fine for things 2' on a side. For 1' square I need to reduce the cutting speed/depth i.e. the force applied to the work.
    Plenty of...

    Re: Bluing Linear Rails??

    What benefit would you get?
They're already hardened. They need lubrication--this and a dust cover will take care of oxidation.

    Same with the ball screws.
These are precision designed and made...

    Re: Open Source V-Carving

I'm using my shop vac as a vacuum holddown--it works pretty good, but I need to take lighter cuts to keep from pushing the work around.

    Re: Open Source V-Carving

Somehow I'm not understanding Flip Normals vs Add Box under V-Carve Settings.
I'm doing inlay, so on the prismatic cut side Add Box seems recommended from the V-Carve Settings form, but I don't know...

This looks like a huge improvement over the three bearing approach.

  23. Re: ARTCAM, what do others think of there new ways from AUTODESK

Ask the people who make the software you like. They should have an easy way to transfer the license to a new computer. No point in learning new software if you like what you have.

Using linear rails in Z axis--how many?

I made my cnc router with 80/20 linear rails--shaped plastic blocks that fit in the 80/20 rail. It seems to work fine on X and Y. I have had a bit of slop in lettering, so a small entry divot gets...

Re: Need some advices on lathe/mill options

We covered the whole ceiling. The room was maybe 12x12 feet, used foam 18x12 feet, 1" thick. Easier to do in a small enclosure.

Be sure to get the right sort of foam. You want open cell foam, this will work much better than closed cell.
