Never owned a R8 taper, but believe there is a set screw up in the taper, maybe it's damaged and won't let tooling up past it.

You could make a shim stock washer under I of them, then reinstall it.
It will take a bit of fiddling to find the right thicknesses, and will depend if you screw is worn in the centre.

Have you checked out Linear motion bearings on ebay? He has 1hp, 2hp 3hp etc air and water cooled spindles with or VFD's for around that price. He also sells just the spindles.
