  1. Re: Feedrate and RPM for plywood 6mm compression bit

I tried going for the smaller bit diameter. It seemed to work much better. I'm not sure if it's perfect but going 4mm or less is definitely improving the process.

    Thanks.
  2. Re: Feedrate and RPM for plywood 6mm compression bit

    Okay, thanks! I'll try that.
  3. Re: Feedrate and RPM for plywood 6mm compression bit

I usually don't go too deep relative to the bit diameter because it already happened that the spindle couldn't handle it and was dragging really bad through the wood.
I think my machine rigidity is...
  4. Re: Feedrate and RPM for plywood 6mm compression bit

    Hi,
    Thanks for the reply.

I understand what you say about the compression bit pass depth, but I'm trying to achieve a relatively clean border edge. From my experience the upcut alone creates more...
  5. Feedrate and RPM for plywood 6mm compression bit

    Hi,
I'm using a 6mm diameter compression bit to mill a 10mm thick plywood sheet.

    I have a MM-1000 spindle with a Stepcraft machine.

    My settings are:
    21000 RPM
    40mm/sec feedrate
    1.3 pass...
  6. 6.35mm collet doesn't fit into clamping nut

    Hi,

I bought a clamping nut here

And I also bought from the same website, a 6.35mm collet here

I thought these would fit together, but they don't.
Is there any clue to what I did wrong in...
  7. Re: advice on chipping and milling quality with 8mm bit on 10mm plywood

    Thanks ger21!
I'll try that. Compensating by reducing depth seems like a viable solution.

I'll report back with good/bad results.
  8. Re: advice on chipping and milling quality with 8mm bit on 10mm plywood

    Hi,
I'm a bit confused from all the answers.
When I try to put my bit data into FSWizard for example, the result is to run the 8mm bit at 110 mm/sec, with 8700 RPM... MY machine can only go 50...
  9. Re: advice on chipping and milling quality with 8mm bit on 10mm plywood

    @ger21,

But lowering the RPM and raising the feedrate would make the bit cut less smoothly and go faster through the wood... isn't that the opposite of what I'm trying to achieve?
  10. Re: advice on chipping and milling quality with 8mm bit on 10mm plywood

    Hi,
Okay thanks. I think also compression bits would work better.

You say 'try running faster... 5mm at a time', but this is an 8mm diameter bit, and my pass depth was 3mm... so 5mm would be...
  11. Re: advice on chipping and milling quality with 8mm bit on 10mm plywood

    Ah, my mistake indeed..
Thank you for the clarification :)

Do you have any suggestions about the other issues I mentioned..?
  12. Re: advice on chipping and milling quality with 8mm bit on 10mm plywood

    I'm using a Stepcraft 840, with a MM-1000 spindle.

The bit is attached in an image here.

It doesn't make sense to me to run it at that feedrate... The machine max is 3000mm/min, so that's...
  13. advice on chipping and milling quality with 8mm bit on 10mm plywood

    Hi,
I'm milling a profile cut full depth on a 10mm plywood piece.

    I'm using an 8mm, 3-flute endmill, downcut.
    My settings were:

    16000 RPM
    5mm/sec feedrate

    Woodburning pen advice needed

    Hi,
I've been trying to use the woodburning pen here.

I've done many tests trying to burn a QR code, but several things keep ruining the tests:

Re: 3D milling 8mm bit issue

    Hi,

    Followup issue:

I tested another time with the 8mm bit, with the following settings:

    8mm bit, 3 flutes
    5.1mm pass depth
    10.2mm cut depth
    30% stepover
  16. Re: Choosing correct clamping nut for MM-1000 spindle

Can I use ER20 collets with the Kress nut?

What's important is that the nut fits the spindle, right?

    What about this nut?
  17. Re: Choosing correct clamping nut for MM-1000 spindle

    Hi,
Yes I obviously looked at that, but the parts from stepcraft have an outrageously high shipping cost to where I am... that's why I am looking for alternatives, either amazon or ebay.

    What I'd...
  18. Choosing correct clamping nut for MM-1000 spindle

    Hi,
    I've got a Stepcraft machine and a MM-1000 spindle.

I have the clamping nut that came with the spindle, which has a neck of 15mm and a hexagonal top part of 5mm, 20mm total.
    You can see it...
  19. Re: what's the difference between the software toolpath types?

    Hi,
Thanks. I've searched the website FAQ and the general rules, but there is no 'help'... can you direct me to that information?
  20. what's the difference between the software toolpath types?

    Hi,
There are 12 toolpaths, from 'profile' to '3d finishing' and all between.
I'm wondering about the difference for these types:

What's the difference between 'Pocket', 'Inlay'?

    What's the...

Re: 3D milling 8mm bit issue

    Hi,
I used the FSwizard before setting it up, but I didn't get your results. Can you explain perhaps a bit what you put in the setup there? I put the diameter and sizes of the bit, and the material...

    3D milling 8mm bit issue

    Hi,

I am working on my first 3D milling wood piece. The 3D model is a concave fruit bowl, with multiple concave parts to it.

    Follow up question:

If I want to mill a 50mm thick wood piece, with a 'roughing' pass, using an 8mm bit, are these settings okay? :

Re: 1mm bit broke off at start of mill

    Hi,
Thanks Craig and ZASto for your help!

Since I didn't have another 1mm bit, I switched to a 2mm one, with the following settings:

    End mill : 2mm, 2-flute
    Pass depth: 1 mm
    Stepover: 0.4mm...
