Nope, you don't have to have "hard" limit switches to use soft limits. But you should have at least homing switches to reference somehow your soft limits. That's what I have and it works like charm....

Can you put nipples on 6040 without modifications or one have to drill?

If you have identical drives, I would swap it with other one to see, what will happen. Same VFD will fail => bad VFD, VFD on same machine will fail => cables or motor.

I asked several of them and none is willing to sell it without controller / spindle.
