  1. Re: BT30 spindle built from scratch, with ATC possibility.

    Hey man!

Something's weird here... My settings is set correct, 5min ago I saw 2 PM's from wubian, but now their gone... I'll try sending one to you.
  2. Re: BT30 spindle built from scratch, with ATC possibility.

If you want to build a router you have to make your own CAD model, so drawing a spindle shouldn't be hard. In fact basically the spindle design is just a profile revolved around an axis, easy to make...
  3. Re: BT30 spindle built from scratch, with ATC possibility.

Hey man, thanks for being interested in my spindle! :)

The design isn't something I found on the net, it's my own design. Tho, I won't release the 3D-files, I've already published a section view...
  4. Re: BT30 spindle built from scratch, with ATC possibility.

Lathed the labyrinth seal for the roller bearing yesterday. They're made of Uddeholm Stavax for it's rust-resistant properties, will be hardened to 52HRC for extra stiffness.

    I also bored 6 holes...
  5. Re: BT30 spindle built from scratch, with ATC possibility.

    Heh, thanks guys! :D
  6. Re: BT30 spindle built from scratch, with ATC possibility.

Another test assembly today, might be one of the last test assemblies before the finished spindle! All that's left for the rotating parts is the labyrinth seal above the roller bearing, might start...

    Re: Ball screw choice

Y axis is going back and forth, X axis is going left to right, Z axis is going up and down.

About the screw, you have to think about resolution too, you will most likely have 2000steps/rev when...
  8. Re: BT30 spindle built from scratch, with ATC possibility.

Made a keyway groove in the spindle today. :)

  9. Re: BT30 spindle built from scratch, with ATC possibility.

    Thanks man! :D

Me and a colleague ground the back bearing seat on the spindle housing yesterday. The housing is now complete.

I also ground the spacer ring to tolerance, which sits below...
  10. Re: BT30 spindle built from scratch, with ATC possibility.

Made myself a hook spanner for the KMT nuts.

Me and a colleague were gonna grind the back bearing seat after work yesterday but the belt to the spindle weared out, so were grinding it...
  11. Re: BT30 spindle built from scratch, with ATC possibility.

That's awesome man! Good luck! :D

Time for another update! A colleague helped me in the CNC-grinder. Grinding the spindle housing, outside and the front bearing seat is now done. Will grind...
  12. Re: BT30 spindle built from scratch, with ATC possibility.

Thanks man! It's made of Uddeholm Impax, a pre-hardened tool steel; should be around ~30HRC. Tho I'm thinking about plasma nitride these to get a hard surface, around ~58HRC if I remember correct.

  13. Re: BT30 spindle built from scratch, with ATC possibility.

The gripper is finally done! :D

There was a slight problem when splitting the part tho, wasn't clamped good enough so it moved.(check the pic below, you can see a mark in one of the petals.) But I...
  14. Re: BT30 spindle built from scratch, with ATC possibility.

RAM? The only RAM I know is for computers, haha!

    It's a wire-EDM.
  15. Re: BT30 spindle built from scratch, with ATC possibility.

    Time for another update! :D

Milled the back bearing seat in the housing today, left some material for grinding.

I also made a "clamping plate" for the grinder/housing for better...
  16. Re: BT30 spindle built from scratch, with ATC possibility.

    Tkamster: Lol, I don't own a wire-EDM, my job got one. :P

Here we go! Wire-EDMing done! :D

Started machining the first bearing seat, got really bad surface finish, but that...
  17. Re: BT30 spindle built from scratch, with ATC possibility.

When I got to work this morning the wire-edm had only run halfway, started it again after work. It SHOULD be done tomorrow morning.

  18. Re: BT30 spindle built from scratch, with ATC possibility.

    PEU, Thanks man! :D

hjl4, Well, the thing is it would've been just as expensive or expensiver as a "real" BT30 spindle. The amount of time i put into this spindle is huge! And because more or less...
  19. Re: BT30 spindle built from scratch, with ATC possibility.

Thanks guys, I'm glad you like it so far! :D Right now the housing is being wire-EDM'd. I'll show a pic in a day or so. :)

shedbob, About the design, here is the new vs the old one. Quite the...
  20. BT30 spindle built from scratch, with ATC possibility.

Okay, first off, I've been building this spindle for a few months already, but only got a buildlog on a Swedish forum, then I thought wny not share this build with you guys too! :D
