  1. Re: Building Steel Frame Gantry Router for wood, MDF, and maybe more

Thread is still super out of date but I did get this thing working (though not finished). Sadly I moved and it is currently in storage. Will hopefully update this thread eventually.

Okay this thread is super out of date, but here is a quick video of the Y axis moving.

  3. Re: Building Steel Frame Gantry Router for wood, MDF, and maybe more

It's been awhile, but progress is still being made, albeit slowly. I wasn't satisfied with the torsional stiffness of the frame so I added some bracing.

  4. Re: Building Steel Frame Gantry Router for wood, MDF, and maybe more

Thanks for the comments guys, I really appreciate it. I ended up going with the single ballnut, 25mm pitch. The C7 grade were not expensive, so ended up going with them. I will be interested to...
  5. Re: Building Steel Frame Gantry Router for wood, MDF, and maybe more

Wow, I thought I had updated this more recently, but apparently not. I've made some more progress on the frame. I also ordered linear rails and ball screws from BST Automation. They came...
  6. Re: Building Steel Frame Gantry Router for wood, MDF, and maybe more

Can anyone comment on the necessity of double ball nut ball screws? BST automation only has the double ones in 5mm pitch, which is a lot smaller than I wanted to go pitch wise. Should I try and...
  7. Re: Building Steel Frame Gantry Router for wood, MDF, and maybe more

Looks like there has been some interesting discussion since I last visited. Anyway, not a whole lot of progress, but construction has begun. I changed the design to make the side rails one large...
  8. Re: Building Steel Frame Gantry Router for wood, MDF, and maybe more

Hi routalot, I totally get what you're saying here. I've been doing a lot of simulating in my head of various cutting situations, and the Z-Axis clearance issues will definitely be a limitation if...
  9. Re: Building Steel Frame Gantry Router for wood, MDF, and maybe more

Wow, a lot of interesting discussion in this thread. Thank you for the comments everyone.

One question I've been mulling over - why do internal stresses in the base frame matter? Obviously it's...
  10. Re: Building Steel Frame Gantry Router for wood, MDF, and maybe more

    Hi @pippin88
thank you very much for the link! It was very helpful - your machine is quite similar to what I've been envisioning, and it was quite helpful to see something similar that has actually...
  11. Re: Building Steel Frame Gantry Router for wood, MDF, and maybe more

Hi Pete, thanks again for the comments. I will look into brazing a little more. I do like the idea of not having to deal with all the warpage from welding. I only have TIG anyway, so TIG brazing...
  12. Re: Building Steel Frame Gantry Router for wood, MDF, and maybe more

Made a little more progress. Starting to get the hang of Fusion 360 a little. Screenshot below. Integrating the ball screws is going to be interesting. I had thought out most of the frame and...
  13. Building Steel Frame Gantry Router for wood, MDF, and maybe more

Howdy all. I’ve been lurking for awhile and am finally putting a thread together to get some feedback and hopefully document my build if I can get this project off the ground.

    I’m planning to...
