Re: Sudden problem with height control

    Hi,
that technique of sensing a surface is not uncommon. It relies on the motor driving until it is stalled, ie up against a surface and then the motor current will go up dramatically.
    The...

Re: Milli a new composite mill kit

    Hi,
second impression....the tool change is silky smooth.

The Vietnamese supplier threw in a 2 position 5 way pneumatic solenoid so I have set it up and it works perfectly.

    Could very easily...

    Re: New mill from tormach.

    Hi,
I have often dreamed about making a small CNC mill suitable for hobbyists. Indeed my own mill is my own take on an 1100/1500 style and size mill.

There are certain things which I regard as...

Re: Upgrading axis on cnc mill

    Hi,

Sad fact of life. You're not the only person to have come to the conclusion that you need blocks (poor choice for rigidity) OR a gutter milled into the axis bed.

I my case I had the...

Re: Upgrading axis on cnc mill

    Hi,
in my machine (pictured above) I used new (old stock) THK 20mm rails and cars, because that is what I could get from DY-Global at the time. I would have preferred 25mm, but I got what I could....

Re: Upgrading axis on cnc mill

    Hi,
that ballscrew is 5mm pitch and therefore very little torque is required to offset the weight of the Z axis/spindle.

For a 5mm pitch screw the mechanical advantage is 125kg (weight or 1250N)...

Re: Milli a new composite mill kit

    Hi,
got my new spindle today....after a long battle with NZ Customs (my fault). Really nice.....and worth the wait.

First impression is that the HSK32 toolholders are small, you can fit one in...

    Re: New mill from tormach.

    Hi,
yes, I think the Hass mini-mill is the next step up from hobby level machines....but then where does that put the new Tormach?

Given that's its epoxy granite it must have linear rails/cars...

    Re: New mill from tormach.

    Hi,

Yep....thats sort of what I mean, lowest cost with 'pretentions' at least to industrial grade. They have been around a long time and are useful for comparison to manufacturers trying
    to...

    Re: New mill from tormach.

    Hi,
the Hass mini-mill has been the standard by which others have been compared, and it must be said the Hass mini-mill is a damn good machine for the money.
This new Tormach is serious and direct...

Re: Upgrading axis on cnc mill

    Hi,
aside from cost, the big penalty about oversize ballscrews is rotary momentum.

I bought some second hand 32mm diameter, 700mm long BNFN double nut C5 THK ballscrews for my project, without...
  12. Re: Covert NURBS to arc and lines (no polylines)

    Hi,
in Fusion you can draw using splines and then run it through CAM to get Gcode. Not sure how the conversion is done or when, but a spline drawn in a part is faithfully machined.

  13. Re: Design & Build of Lanky - A Ozzie 8x4' long gantry router

    Hi,
I would agree that 30mm rails/cars is outsize relative to the anticipated load. Having said that there is no penalty with using larger more rigid parts other than cost.

    I do think however...

where abouts in NZ are you?

    I'm in Christchurch.

  15. Re: Mach4, ESS\MB3 combo controlling CNC4PC C6 connecting to KBIC speed controller

    Hi,
the MB3 has a sophisticated PWM output that derives its own independent power supply from the internal supply of the MB3. It has linearizing and setting circuits.
You've paid for it why not...
  16. Re: Mach4, ESS\MB3 combo controlling CNC4PC C6 connecting to KBIC speed controller

    Hi,
I thought you said you had an MB3....then why are you bothering with the C6??? The MB3 has a 0-10VDC analogue output, and is way more sophisticated than the C6.

Re: Yaskawa Sigma-7 10.6kHz Noise, EMI

    Hi,
I reckon you are going up the garden path.

I suspect the servos are dithering.

Lets say the commanded position is 123456 but the actual position (encoder) is 123457. The servo will try...
  18. Re: Machine base for manual bench mill: epoxy granite vs concrete

    Hi,
last week I was doing a job for a customer where I had to make 14 parts out of acetal. The total machine time was about six hours.

My coolant tank is only 10l, and yet through the course of...
  19. Re: Machine base for manual bench mill: epoxy granite vs concrete

    Hi,
flood cooling is just so much the 'night and day' difference that I sought. I use to use air-blast and oil spray, and it worked OK.

With sticky grades of aluminum (3000 series and some of...
  20. Re: Problems with mach4 mill after updating.

    Hi,
I agree and think that NFS remove good and stable builds of Mach4 way WAY too early. There are thousands of users running 4809 and will be for some years yet. It does everything that is required...
  21. Re: Machine base for manual bench mill: epoxy granite vs concrete

    Hi,
The table I used was actually given to me as it was going to be scrapped. It was the base of a 'pick and place' machine. It is 1300mm x 1100mm and about 600mm high. It has a half inch slab of...
  22. Re: Machine base for manual bench mill: epoxy granite vs concrete

    Hi,
if you are using coolant you need a much bigger table top. You need sides to surround the whole machine otherwise coolant will go EVERYWHERE. I had flood coolant on my first
    mini-mill but it...
  23. Re: Problems with mach4 mill after updating.

    Hi,
Greg has been working on the plugin in Andy's absence and I believe 309 is the best for 5036.

Personally I would use 4809 and its matching ESS plugin version...if you can still get 4809. It...
  24. Re: Machine base for manual bench mill: epoxy granite vs concrete

    Hi,
just as a thought experiment imagine the machine sitting on a concrete floor, not bolted to it, but just sitting on it. Would the machine work? Would it vibrate when cutting?

    Now imagine...
  25. Re: Problems with mach4 mill after updating.

    Hi,
if you have a recent build of Mach4 then it will certainly be of the 5000 series, probably 5036. In which case you will absolutely need a new ESS plugin, I think 309 is the current
    and most bug...
  26. Re: Machine base for manual bench mill: epoxy granite vs concrete

    Hi,
it seems to me that you are making a large project for yourself for little or no benefit.

It has already been established that the table on which you sit the machine will have little to no...
  27. Re: Y axis missing steps and running jerkey. What to test?

    Hi,
it might, but then again it might not. What you are trying to do is stop the noise from affecting your machine.......but the noise has already got in there.
What you should focus on is...
  28. Re: Y axis missing steps and running jerkey. What to test?

    Hi,
you should separate the signal cables as far as possible form any highly electrically noisy cable like a spindle cable. 150mm of separation will provide a marked improvement.

    You cannot...
  29. Re: Design & Build of Lanky - A Ozzie 8x4' long gantry router

    Hi,

how many of these things do you expect to make? Be realistic here....all very well to make a machine production ready but have any of your designs been repeated?

I would guess a new Jager...
  30. Re: Problems with mach4 mill after updating.

    Hi,
what build Mach4 had you been running and what build of Mach4 are you updated to?. What motion controller are you using?

Mach4 came out a while back with the first of the 5000 series builds...
