Hi Steve, nice to meet you.
Anyone still meeting around Long Island City, NY?
Nelson
Count me in. I now work in LIC near the Citicorp building. Weekdays are best cuz I'm already there. Let me know and I'll be there!
Those in my sig, plus a HF 4x6, Jet 14" Wood/Metal Bandsaw, Craftsman 10" Table Saw and Rockler Router Table.
+1 on the Glacern. It's pretty well-made stuff.

Nice Southbend.
Check out the Southbend Yahoo group if you haven't already.

I am STILL interested in putting together a NYC metalworkers group!
I see that Will had one meeting, but it didn't seem to go anywhere. I'm now working in the area of Will's shop, so it would be...
How do you make that adjustment?

What a nice spacious clean work area...wish I had that kinda room!

Yes, I would hope it would be recurring, every month or couple months. I know you are further out, but we couldn't get a shop out there, and Will offered.

I am a rank newbie trying to learn manual machining first. I would like to know how to operate a lathe, a mill, how to restore an old American mill, turning, milling, maintenance, lubrication,...
Anthony,
We're trying to get a group together at Will's place in LIC, Queens. Would you be interested?
We need those interested to let us know so that we can set it up.
Thanks,
Great list! Anything else? (Chop saw, etc?)

Contact with the workpiece, not with each other...

Is the clamping pressure placed on the workpiece supposed to be so tight that it cannot move and the ratchet slips, or it is supposed to be just tight enough so the barrels of the mic make contact,...
Been hot here too Dave, though not that hot. I just ran a 30 amp line for an air conditioner. Expensive, but the shop space is unusable otherwise.

Chris,
Sounds like it was an awesome seminar. If one is going to be run again, please let us know.

Try Joe at PLAZA MACHINERY,USED MACHINERY, METALWORKING MACHINERY, WOODWORKING MACHINERY. He has a list of parts on his site.

I find Enco to be cheaper on the same item. MSC inflates the price, then gives you coupon codes to bring it back down, but Enco still beats them. On service and items that are harder to find, I like...
Is it possible that they are afraid to lose the reading if they open the mic up again?
Just a thought.

dsnellen,
Very well organized small shop. I like your layout. Good work!

We want to get a meeting together at Will's place of NYC machinists. Can we get some indication of who here would be able to attend, and what the best time in the late afternoon or evening (or...

I keep missing the sales on the Mitutoyo's, and then can't afford them without the discounts.
I did get lucky and pick up a nice set of Starrett's 3-4, 4-5 etc similar to the ones shown in...
I have seen the Gadgetbuilder site and it's great- that looks like a great group.
For those also in Queens, (Bayside, Whitestone), the Long Island Group we are trying to get together may be more...

For dial calipers, I was told to get the Mitutoyo Abs digitals. I have a Mitutoyo dial test indicator and a Brown & Sharp Bestest dial finger test indicator that is .0005 I think. Seem to work very...
Carl, that sounds awesome. I have a small mill (Burke #4) and LW dividing head to try to cut some gears. Have not done any CNC, but would like to try one day, especially after reading how you do it....
