Just a quick correction to the above: looking at the diagram in the NVEM manual again, there is indeed a battery between Gnd and the relay. If I had looked better the problem would not have existed....

I have noticed earlier in this thread (and most everywhere else on the net) that users of the NVEM / NVUM boards are having issues with getting a relay (for switching a router or vacuum for example)...
