I'm working on doing some preventitive maintenance on our 8HC Lathe which has developed an intermittent boot-up glitch. I suspect power supply ripple and want to have a good poke around.
Before I...
We have a VMC4020 which has always had its issues related to the turret tool changer but it has developed a new and annoying habit in the last week.
When making parts the machine behaves...
Thanks dhardt for the guide and info.
After much cleaning, measuring, cutting, measuring, scaping, measuring, blueing, measuring, and more measuring I manged to get the turcite installed and the...
No worries, you have a valid point.
I do have a little experience scraping in an old manual mill so I'm willing to give this a try, do some reading and learn by doing.
The lathe is unusable at...
Thanks,
I did send them a RFQ and they replied promptly. Also they were , by quite a bit, the most reasonably priced source of turcite and glue I found.
TURCITE!
:D
That's the name I was looking for.
Now to find a place that will sell me a small amount and some glue.
Next task is to figure out how to lift the cross slide out of the machine...
I've been working to diagnose an intermittent chatter that our operator has been mentioning.
PUMA 10HC
Ser # PH100157
Upon inspection I found there to be a lot of play in the z-axis slide's...
Thanks, Rodney and Tech, for the tip. Changed all wiring to turret with continuous flex rated shielded wiring, Machine seems to jog turret flawlessly at this point, time will tell.
Upon machine...
Problem solved.
Input rectifier IGBT pair was toast (the 2 nearest the capacitors). Also a blown 5 amp glass fuse.
The output IGBT trio was fine.
The blown 5 amp fuse had me worried as that...
Update: I think I found the problem

Board doesn't look too badly scored, going to check the IGBTs, and if they're OK,...
I'm working on a lathe which has suddenly decided to trip the main breaker instantly on startup when I press "MachineReady" button on panel. None of the internal circit breakers are tripped, however...
As promised, heres a quick clip of the problem

I did reverse the motor and encoder wiring and as I suspected, the problem direction reversed. That is to say, the...
Im planning to do just that when I get the motor back, should the problem persist.
The motor is homed via a hall effect sensor, driven off a secondary shaft on the gearbox. The encoder is only...

I'm assuming you mean that you're pushing on the outside edge of the tool carrier plate with 2 fingers?
I have to remove the tool carrier plate to remove and disengage the transmission so this is...
The thrust bearings did show some wear on the race washers, more on the upper bearing than the lower.
Before servicing I had to use both hands holdin on to the bottom of the shaft to turn it...
Tedger, yes I have gone through al the steps in the service manual (thanks for posting PDF versions) to no avail. I also thought of the limit switch being triggered due to weight and so removed the...
Update #2
Unfortunately the "fix" didn't appear to do the trick.
We ran the machine for hours with no problems, however when we loaded up with tools for machining a hydraulic valve block...
Update:
Pulled the turret amp and had a close look at it. It was pretty dirty with oil residue, so decided to clean circuit boards with Isoprpyl alcohol. As stated, there is no current limit...
I forgot to mention, this unit is equipped with a servo turret drive, not a Geneva drive.
Still, thank you for the reply.
Hi, I'm working on a Fadal VMC4020 with an 88HS control, AC axis motors.
The problem the machine is having is that it will only rotate the tool carousel in clockwise direction. When it is...
