Contact JT at Shopmaster- they carry a lot of spare parts for their older machines which used both R-8 and Morse#3 taper spindles. The come as a complete cartridge or as parts.
Those early machines did not have a shift lever for the threading. There was a gear mounting block which you engaged by loosening a nut and rotating the block to engage the gears for the power feed....
They have some good deals- I got a couple of the books and a 2" digital dial indicator- about 50% less than other E-bay sellers.
Fishriver,
That is the same as my first Shoptask- not too far away on the serial # either. I have since upgraded 3 times and now have the Mill Turn. I did a ton of work on my Shoptask for the...
Duckster,
Check with JT at Shoptask and give him the serial number and send some pictures if you can. He can look up the file and tell you the original price and what all was sold with it. He can...
On those older machines there was a steel plate that swiveled on a pin to engage the power feed/ threading gears. There were 2 gears and shafts in the set, and by using 1 gear in one hole the lead...
Most companies these days are using fulfillment warehouses for their machines and rely on the Chinese factories for the adjustments and setups. Smithy and Tormach both do the same, and if you read...
The way that was done in the old days was Chuck would cut the original ends from the acme screws, machine them, and pin them to the new ball screws, so there were never any originals leftover. ...
Do some research on the ESS system before dropping more money, because it cannot do threading. They do not have a feedback to maintain rpm/feedrate on a lathe or a way to properly modulate RPM from...
There is a guy on E-Bay selling a nice set of 3 limit switches all pre-wired for NO or NC operation which look like an easy installation on the Shopmaster machines.
Assembled Home/Limit Switch With...
I agree, sadly there are some people who view the forum as a place to cry "Mommy Mommy" rather than allowing the manufacturer a reasonable chance to resolve an issue. Then to compound the problem...
Sounds like they tried to put the pin as close to the point of torque as possible which is under the bearing. An engineers decision in which a very minor gain in operation results in a major...
My machine has only 1 E-Stop switch, which kills all power to the machine. Can you clarify if you have more than one switch or are you referring to the main e-stop?
I think Wreckermech probably has...
Assuming the guy only has a CNC lathe to work with, and the part is an odd size or very large, for which there would not be dies available, here is how I would approach it. My machine uses mach 3...
Of course for run of the mill threads, a die is the simple solution, but who owns a LH die for the threads on a 100-4 Healey knockoff hub?
Roger,
Yes, in an ideal world you would have a machine for every type of job, but I think he is trying to find a single machine that will do a variety of jobs.
I doubt that any motorcycle uses anything like 1-1/2 x 8 threads, but yes, that would require a very large manual lathe. A smaller CNC lathe could do the job by programming a lot of lighter cuts.
Yes, a manual lathe would be a better choice, but he wants a CNC lathe and wonders if he could still do the occasional thread chasing.
This was posted on another forum, and I thought some folks over here might have some ideas on how to do it.
I am in the market for a lathe.
Something I need to do frequently is to clean up...
Blackice,
Yes, I was referring to the other guy who threw in a bunch of name calling which the moderator removed. I explained my idea of doing it, but I don't think there is really an easy way on...
Make your own conclusions from this other guy, he clearly is only interested in scaring away a potential Mill Turn buyer. I can say without any doubt that the Mill Turn can cut perfect threads, and...
I would assume that you are not buying the Mill Turn just for this specific job, because you could probably buy the various dies or thread chasers to cover almost all the axles around for a few...
I am going to order the more expensive unit and give it a try. It has a nice set of controls and automatically raises and lowers the air motor to engage the drawbar. It looks like a pretty easy...
The fellow in the barrel threading video is also offering some upgrades for Shopmaster machines- lathe spiders and a bolt on kit for a 10,000 rpm engraving motor.
...
Stanger,
The white machines had a Morse #4 taper in the lathe spindle and a Morse #3 in the tailstock. They also had a Morse # 3 in the mill spindle. They came with 2 drawbars, one for the lathe...
The article makes some good points, especially the first sentence. But it was written in a different time and context. In 1955 there was not a huge hobby market in machining, that was only brought...
Set up time will probably take an afternoon to get it uncrated, on the bench, moved in place, leveled and cleaned up and test run. Probably a few more hours to do the final setups like steps per...
[QUOTE=Norton_BMW;1939750]I am curious how many reading this post have actually measured of verified the tolerances of their machines?

Meant no offense, quite the opposite- I thought the little note pad/pencil holder was a neat project with the engraved name on it. It must have taken some hours to hog out the metal, and then use...
