Nice job. Do you think the cracks were from shrinkage, or from stress in demolding?

Re: BST automation vs dy-global eBay

    craig-
no, the "DGC5" means double flange cutting, ground, C5 accuracy. the R in OFUR means right hand thread. one can see in the finish that they are ground. i'm sure they're not as good as...

yes not cheap, still almost $1000usd for the set of 3, but drastically less than THK, NSK etc

Re: BST automation vs dy-global eBay

i ordered custom length TBI C5 double nut preloaded (OFUR) ballscrews from BST motion. they can do whatever end machining you require. parts arrived quickly and price was good, i'm happy.

Maybe you could attach the steel bar that goes onto the open side before de-molding, to reinforce it?
  6. Re: UHPC+steel fixed gantry router/alu mill machine build

Looks like you're off to a great start. I hope you can get the base out of the mold without any damage!
  7. Re: Steel rectangular hollow section base for Mill

Read through my thread: https://www.cnczone.com/forums/cnc-do-it-yourself-/412132-forum.html Machine footprint is roughly 900x900mm, work area is 610x460x210mm. FEA stiffness theoretically 100+ N/um...
  8. Re: Advice needed for parts selection for new DIY CNC Mill

agree less tabs and fewer plates would be good. think about warping during assembly. ideally you would assemble the whole part and use small tack welds to hold it together, then be able to do your...
  9. Re: Catahoula's router/mill build - welded steel with EG

Did some manual milling on the spindle plate at a friend's garage last night and this afternoon. With the temps dropping to -30 C we were willing to blast the tank top propane heater and keep the...

What was the shipping charge? Could it really be more than the cost of a custom granite base and the shipping of that? I thought you had decided to buy the whole machine

Nice move, gecko, hope you're making chips soon
  12. Re: Granite Base Moving Gantry - Looking For Feedback

    Hi pete-

I agree completely about the primacy of rigidity over other considerations. This is the reason I suggest heavy wall steel construction- without a doubt the most bang for your buck in...
  13. Re: Granite Base Moving Gantry - Looking For Feedback

    Gecko-

If you have the opportunity to buy machine that fits your needs at a good price (not sure if the shipping is), and your desire is to use a CNC machine, by all means, buy it. I know it...
  14. Re: does anyone have any documentation for this controller?

is that what happens to a machine from running water mist coolant? yikes

Re: Milli a new composite mill kit

Great report, thanks. I was watching a Stefan gotteswinter video last night and doing FS Wizard calcs as he put a 4flute 6mm endmill to a 10mm deep full slotting cut in tool steel at 2000 rpm. FS...
  17. Re: Granite Base Moving Gantry - Looking For Feedback

I bought a 600x400x250 cabinet for a 3 axis controller with CL86T stepper drives and a large 1000w toroidal power supply and i think it is too small to fit everything including the 2.2kw VFD. With...
  18. Re: UHPC+steel fixed gantry router/alu mill machine build

I also tried to buy HGH-20-HA blocks with ZB preload and was told by the distributor (an aliexpress store in this case) that Hiwin does not recommend ZB preload for smaller size rails. So I got ZA...

Re: Milli a new composite mill kit

Thanks for the notes, good stuff.

I wasn't thinking twice the torque from 8 poles, but the chart accompanying those BT30 spindles (attached) indicates a roughly 25% increase from the 4 pole...

Re: Milli a new composite mill kit

speaking of spindles, anyone know why super high frequency vfd's aren't more common? it seems like in the general desire for a spindle with a wide speed range, an obvious option would be to use an...

Re: Milli a new composite mill kit

I was just going through some of these V(c) speeds too. Been using FSWizard and was surprised that the default surface speed for mild steel & carbide was usually in the 150-180 m/min because I had...

Sweet spindle and a good price for sure

Sounds like you're going to have to try stress relieving welded steel in a pottery kiln ;) At least it's a smallish part

This is actually one of the ideas that motivated my original post. I was thinking a long the lines that being new to CNC machining it may be beneficial to be able to use the e-stop button fairly...
  24. Re: Catahoula's router/mill build - welded steel with EG

Painting is definitely a pain and I'm not particularly looking forward to it, but that said, the frame has quite a bit of stitch welding, so even a careful job isn't going to look amazing, and I'm...

  26. Re: Toroidal PS and E-stop contactor circuit and EdingCNC

Didn't mean to kick the hornet's nest here, just looking for a little nudge in the right direction ;)

  27. Re: Toroidal PS and E-stop contactor circuit and EdingCNC

Yeah that seems reasonable to me. The PrintNC diagrams as well as the Centroid Acorn manual both recommend the contactor circuit, and I understand the idea that the E-stop is not a normal use...

    Hello,

I'm working on this build: https://www.cnczone.com/forums/cnc-do-it-yourself-/412132-forum-6.html
