I have not done this mod yet, but don't you need two A/C bearings in the bottom and one roller bearing at the top of the spindle?
If I am thinking right the two A/C bearings will be preloaded...
Here is a web site I think you should go check out, and then call and talk with them.
Spartan High-Speed CNC Mill
I understand you wanting to do other projects with a machine, but if this...
I believe Saabman is right on this ( sorry), I just looked at the CNC Cookbook web site ( Bob's IH build) and his comes form the bottom and had two bolts with the IH change over. All though it does...
The Y axis nut mount on these mills is bad for working loose. They only have one bolt and very little surface area to give stability. You will have to go from the top down so no need to remove it...
So glad to you still getting this machine together, quit impressive to say the least. My son is moving to Chattanooga hear soon, you are about halfway between his new place and me. When I make...
It looks like you have two different pitch screws, or you slipped when entering the specs and entered two different specs.
Use a test indicator and a block/gauge of known size to measure and...
Really if you go to the guys web site there is not much in the way of dreaming going on.

Wow, I don't know why I have never thought of the block filler for this. This product is made for stiffening up the cast iron blocks, so it should work a treat. I cant remember what this stuff...
I know a machine has already been bought, but just for others to have the info here is a link for some nice priced machines in both CNC and manual. Of real interest is the RF-45 style turnkey CNC...

I do still have them, but I plan to use them on a project where I just need screws that will work and there accuracy and smoothness will not really matter.
Have you...
Those Pittman motors are way more powerful than one would expect, they would run the mill fine. Its a shame we lost Aaron as the owner of IH, IMHO the people lost a lot of what Aaron was trying...
Jid2, your right the three flute in a 1/4" end mill just doesn't leave enough room to move the chips out "when slotting". Even with a bigger end mill a 2 flute would be best bet, again when...
That is a sweet mod to the table. BTW your machines performance is very good, keep up the vids (love it).

Bolton is located at
Bolton Hardware
3633 Pomona Blvd.
Pomona, CA 91768
Not sure how that is not a USA company.
There has been a few CNC conversions of there manual mill/drills, here are...
Brown, nice looking build. I think your right about this section should be for the RF-45 builds only, but with IH & Tormach having sections for there own machines there is just not enough RF-45...
Glad to here things are going in a new dirrection on your build, I was worried for you for a while. Take your time and figure it all out and you will be running before you know it.
Good...
If you do a search on the forum for this ebay seller you will find many threads talking about all the problems they have been through with this guy.
Why not buy your steppers from a better...
The A/C servo's will always be smoother/quiter than steppers. Infact you can count on them being smoother/quiter than D/C brushed servo's (some high end drivers/systems can get close to A/C servo). ...
I agree with AL, this lathe looks to be more of a WW 1 area (if not older).
The gap in the bed, and the bottom of the beds design are good clues to watch for on brand/builder. I have never...
Why would you think they dont sale them anymore? Looking at the thread I linked it is not very old. Ofcourse the only way to know is to call Dave, he is very respectable and will tell you truth...
Yes your spindle is getting to hot, it should not get any hoter than *100 to *140f.
I would back the preload off. It may be best to back it off enough that it does not cause much heat at all...
I dont see where yuo get 12" Y out of a Haas mini mill? Maybe you where thinking X axis.
ANyway for a mill close to the Haas mini at a lower price you might look at Dave's mills.

It probably would not cost to much to have that made at your local machine shop. It also could be made from many different type metal if wanted (brass, bronze, cast iron, or even 6061 or 7075...
Mine has a snap ring on the splined shaft ( the big geared one) on the top side. It really has two snap rings, one to allow the shaft to come out of the bearing, and one to allow the bearing to...
Something else to think about is customer safety, and to be honest your descriptions are not adding up to good to me.
Like for instance, you want it so a customer can walk up and bolt...
You can do a lot for the look of the metal surfaces without machining it. I cant remember the exact way to go about it but if you go to the "Practical Machinist" forum, then look under the South...
That spindle is simply kickin. You said you ran it up to 8000rpm (well 7000 smoothly), does that MicroMax go that high in RPM?
It looks liike you have the pulleys helping alot but I...
I will have to agree with this. One thing, if your going to run a older machine you need to tear into it and learn what makes it tick. This is the only way you will be able to keep it running...
Thats kinda odd to show a Toshiba inverter, with a single phase A/C motor. It seems a call to talk to someone would be worth the time.
I would have to consider the G9972Z lathe myself. ...
