CNC Frame Design - Looking for feedback

Any thoughts on this frame design I've come up with. It will be a bolt and epoxy build with adjustable feet. Length is 1.5 meters. Rail metal size will be 160x80 beams. Perhaps its a bit overbuilt,...
  4. Re: Any thought on my Z axis Design (first build) Steel vs Aluminium Plate?

I will try again it's just it seems businesses these days with that kind of machinery mainly deal with large corporate style businesses, they aren't interested in small jobs for an individual. I...
  5. Re: Any thought on my Z axis Design (first build) Steel vs Aluminium Plate?

I'd do the same as you if I had the option. I don't think we have the same small odd job type machine shops here in the UK, at least I can't find anything locally.
  6. Re: Any thought on my Z axis Design (first build) Steel vs Aluminium Plate?

Thank you, i'll consider getting a second hand one, i've never got round to buying a belt sander. Do you do any checks to make sure the rail isn't twisted from end to end?

    When I flattened a...

Thanks a lot everyone, this is far more help than I expected. I have some thinking and more research to do for now.

Perhaps I'll make a built log thread in future once things start in physical...
  8. Re: Any thought on my Z axis Design (first build) Steel vs Aluminium Plate?

Steel box section is what I'd like to go with, I'll.

I was under the impression for mounting hiwin rails rails you need an extremely flat surface or the bearing wont run smoothly. My end product...

I did find the idea a little odd as i know epoxy isn't all that tough, maybe a little harder than rubber but I definitely see your point. I imagine perhaps with the weight being spread over the rail...
  10. Re: Any thought on my Z axis Design (first build) Steel vs Aluminium Plate?

Very helpful, thanks you! I guess even if the stepper can handle it I would still need to make the Y axis robust enough not to sag.
  11. Re: Any thought on my Z axis Design (first build) Steel vs Aluminium Plate?

    Thanks again Peter.

I'm still looking into the epoxy leveling but can't see much alternative without paying a lot of have the rail supports machined.

    I'll definitely consider your...
  12. Re: Any thought on my Z axis Design (first build) Steel vs Aluminium Plate?

Thanks that's interesting to see. I don't think I have enough knowledge to understand confidently but I think I can see your paint point about weight being a rather small element.
  13. Re: Any thought on my Z axis Design (first build) Steel vs Aluminium Plate?

Hi Peter thanks for sharing your knowledge. My initial intention is to use it for musical instruments like Harps, perhaps the odd bit of furniture and artistic pieces too. Part of my reason for going...

Thanks Graig. My inexperience probably makes me want to be over cautious. Its probably worth saying the nonferrous metals would be more of a bonus than anything essential, speed would not be a real...
  15. Re: Any thought on my Z axis Design (first build) Steel vs Aluminium Plate?

I presume I could place the flanges to they come out instead of inwards like in this drawing? I would add a front brace too as the spindle carriage wont go past the end of the plate.

    The only...
  16. Re: Any thought on my Z axis Design (first build) Steel vs Aluminium Plate?

I'm surprised granite is only about as stiff as aluminium given granite isn't at all ductile.

"Would not go any "thinner" into the future 3) 24mm thick AL is equivalent to 17mm thick steel and...
  17. Re: Any thought on my Z axis Design (first build) Steel vs Aluminium Plate?

Thanks a lot for your input.

I imagined 8mm steel is equal to 24mm aluminium if it's 3 times stiffer. I guess the extra distance between the aluminium faces mean it might not work quite as simply...
  18. Any thought on my Z axis Design (first build) Steel vs Aluminium Plate?

Hello, here is my Z axis design,

I'm thought it would be better to use ground steel plate so I can reduce the distance the spindle extends from the gantry. I plan to use 8mm ground steel plate...

That's right. I'm thinking of something like the lee hyun machine, you can see on YouTube. I'm most likely getting ahead of myself though, perhaps I'll be fine without. Keeping things simple to start...
  20. Re: Is this possible? Rack and Pinion Quick Release

    Thanks for your thoughts.

I think I will actually go with the controller option and see how it works out. I'm only processing small quantities of material for now so a bit of extra time isnt too...
  21. Is this possible? Rack and Pinion Quick Release

    Hello,

I'm currently working on a my first cnc design for wood working and thought it would be nice to have the option to use the machine manually as well as by computer control (moving the...
