Janky or not as long as it works!
I don't know if it matter anymore; I just got my access back, but here it is:
I used West 105 resin + 206 "slow" hardener. With two path between each rails and the "flowier" 206, it ended up...
I found that 10mm pitch ballscrews with low inductance nema 23 steppers (below 3.0 mH) were a sweet spot for my machine that is built along the same lines as yours just a tad smaller
It's precise...
Thanks for sharing the model!
I really like your dust shoe design.
Do you have easy access to the collet for tool change?
Little update.
GRBL version 1.1h was released last summer with dual screws / limit switch support. This enable self squaring gantry!
Only problem was that enabled, dual axis prevent the uses...
What would be a good cutter to cut pockets and chamfer in Trespa phenolic panels on my router?
Do downcut or upcut makes a difference?
My spindle goes from 7 500 to 20 000 rpm; whats are the...
I ran Yonico and Onsrud 57-xxx serie with good success but Onsrud finish is a tad better and last 25%-50% longer. Yonico is almost half the price of Onsrud depending of vendor.
Mostly in maple,...
Great job!
How do you produce de G-Code?
Will you laminate phenolic to hold your rails as you did with the Z axis?
How will you make rails on both side leveled on the same plane?
Great to see this project active again!
Care to post the $20 to $27 parameters of your GRBL controller?
On my machine I had better retention with softwood insert. I drilled the hole slightly bigger (+1mm or 1.5mm bigger diam) than I'd drill for softwood.
I used 403 filler because but 404 like Gerry...
There are some on its blog page. https://www.diycncdesign.com/blog/
Best of luck Jeremy! This is a solid build, I'm being partial here as there are a lot of similarity with my machine. ;)
The base recipe I'm using to cut dry.
Onsrud 63-610 or Yonico 31011-SC. Both Single flute, 0.125dia, 0.5 LOC and 0.250 shank.
0.002 chip load. Usually around 12000-13000 rpm.
I try to use...
I found them under GX16-4 designation.
"-4" being the number of wires

I replaced my Makita RT0701c with a Hitachi M12VC and it is louder than the Makita. The Makita is the quietest router I've ever worked with. Even if the M12VC is louder, once I start cutting, the...
That would have give less area to glue the small torsion boxes to the big one and I still would have had to level the two sides.
I used Rustoleum countertop epoxy to seal the base of my...
I had some aluminium profiling and pocket to do in 1/8 alu. For this I usually use a yonico 31011-SC 1/8 cutter for or Onsrud 63-610 o-flute when I need better surface finish.
I decided to give a...
I've been using Yonico 31011-SC (1/8 single flute 18deg flute angle 1/2 LOC) for aluminium on my CNC router. Not a stellar cutter but for half the price of Amana or Onsrud. For hobby jobs, I'm...
I can't say but any access hole will make the part less rigid.
Maintenance will prpbabpy be a pain with the holes. If the holes are bigger to help maintenance, it will make your gantry side less stiff.
+1 to put the leadscrews outside.
How will you attach the gantry to the linear trucks?
Where's the fun then? ;)
Thanks!
I am not winning a surface finish contest with this one but the part is fully functional and that's what is important.
To each his own.
I had problems too with big assemblies in Fusion. For this kind of project I'm using the SolidWorks license I have at work.
For CAM I prefer Fusion especially for the price....
Doesn't Inventor have Hsm Express? I was using it in Solidworks before I started with Fusion 360.
Great article !
Since the new Z axis is a little bit stiffer and have less backlash I decided to give a try to steel again.
I needed a 1/4 drive 24mm socket ground flat to proprely torque my mountain bike fork...
It probably make the problem worse. What is "lower feed rate"?
I had this router on my first machine and the lowest rpm is around 10000 rpm.
Feed too slow, too many flutes, RPM too high, DOC too big. Recipe for disaster.
This looks like my first attempts with alu.
What is the rpm, feed and DOC you are running?
This is great!
This enclosure is really neat!
