  1. Re: How can one determine if X-axis ballscrew is being lubed without taking it apart?

FYI for anyone in the future reading this.... I isolated this to the motor, I assume it is a permanent magnet motor. I think there is probably nothing wrong with the machine.

Hey so what was causing the bumpy feel? I have exact same symptoms and would love to know!

Interesting, thanks for sharing. I'm used to dealing with the mister blowing chips all around on my router i think this enclosure would do well for that, but im not sure on the coolant. This pump...
  6. Re: Boss 8 CNC retrofit and 5 HP upgrade - Build thread

Looking for some opinions on this enclosure design. Yes I have not drawn in all the back panels yet, they will be there.
    1. how far in should someone have to reach to put a part on the table? I...
  7. Re: Boss 8 CNC retrofit and 5 HP upgrade - Build thread

On this one the assembly seems heavy/ smooth enough that it does a good job of keeping up with positioning. Even so I would probably go down and then back up for re positioning for long bits.
  8. Re: Boss 8 CNC retrofit and 5 HP upgrade - Build thread

Hey man those are looking sharp!
You have to keep in mind also that the engineers at Bridgeport also were probably derating the pulley drive some. The oem servos on this machine were under 300...
  9. Re: Boss 8 CNC retrofit and 5 HP upgrade - Build thread

The quill will be the main source of motion, but when you compare a large drill in a holder to a smaller end mill, the quill travel gets used up quite fast. The Knee will be used to give me some...
  10. Re: Boss 8 CNC retrofit and 5 HP upgrade - Build thread

I kept it the same as the OEM pulleys. 12 for the x and y, 13 for the quill i think.
  11. Re: Boss 8 CNC retrofit and 5 HP upgrade - Build thread

So its been a while since an update. I have mounted and made all the parts for x y and the knee for the servos. The Chinese timing belt pulleys I machined to fit my servos were total crap and I had...
  12. Re: Boss 8 CNC retrofit and 5 HP upgrade - Build thread

I think a tank like that would work great if your using a table chip guard and your not flowing more coolant that the table drains can handle. I think my 1/2hp pump could probably overwhelm the...
  13. Re: Boss 8 CNC retrofit and 5 HP upgrade - Build thread

Basic Idea of shape for enclosure, I'll add doors to it and a tube steel skeleton:
    439370

Did I mention I will also make the chip tray slide out from the bottom for easy cleaning? but I don't...
  14. Re: Boss 8 CNC retrofit and 5 HP upgrade - Build thread

Ok lots of progress on this project. I have purchased 4 750w DMM servos w dyne 4 drives. I also bought all the broachs, reams, and pulleys so I can make pulleys and fit the new motors up. The...
  15. Re: Boss 8 CNC retrofit and 5 HP upgrade - Build thread

    Yea,
I defiantly had the acceleration turned way down, using .25g acceleration the requirement goes up. It looks like with the 750 watt servoes, I would get about 700 lbs machining force while...
  16. Re: Boss 8 CNC retrofit and 5 HP upgrade - Build thread

Ive been plugging data into the calculator at https://www.servotak.eu/tools/engineering_calculator
Now I'm starting to think that the 400w DMM servo would also be a good match for the boss. this is...

I think that's the case it sat for quite a while, I have had it for 4 years and the guy beforeme had it for a long time too. The ballscrew looks great except for the one section next to an opening...
  18. Re: Boss 8 CNC retrofit and 5 HP upgrade - Build thread

So i got a bit of rust on the x ballscrew where bridgeport had an open are under the table. I have some bronze wool and some citric acid coming in. I figure ill try to get the rust off, and may...
  19. I have the OEM table chip guards for the boss....

I have the OEM table chip guards for the boss. Still some chips would fly over it and out the backside I think. And any coolant would soak the floor.
    Maybe you would be interested?

Got some more progress now. Now I'm looking at getting the enclosure designed. I'm also looking at how to better protect the ways. I'm kinda surprised the simple rubber flap is the best anyone has...

The splines looked new and were very tight. Pulling apart the cabinet, I found the hour meter and it has not moved off 0 yet. I'm thinking this mill's story of being a community college mill turned...

    Re: Homemade fixed gantry build

Nice looking design! I would highly recommend you design in way covers now before going any further. Do not overlook this need or you will regret it like I did! are you thinking of having a ATC...

Just needed a little alignment to get the clutch dogs lined up. Now it sounds much better.

I rebuild the kwik switch nut too, it's a little sticky I'm thinking the roll pin might be oriented so...
  24. Re: Boss 8 CNC retrofit and 5 HP upgrade - Build thread

mactec, I have read there is a world of difference in the type of bearing and preload between a heavy duty milling spindle and a high speed light duty/ router spindle. This seems to be why they can...

Well I got it running today. Runs great and rpm is dead on. Just one problem, there is a slapping or grinding noise coming from the spindle. At low speed (200 rpm) in high gear, it makes a...

No kidding? Why in the world did they pick such a cheesey looking connector... ever hear of someone changing them out? I got a bunch of deutch connectors in the garage.

Re: Bridgeport Series 1 CNC Retrofit.

Jim, On this machine (I am also doing a retrofit), I would be concerned about coolant splashing on the servos. The OEM servos seem to be better protected against water ingress than the 400w DMM...
  28. Re: Boss 8 CNC retrofit and 5 HP upgrade - Build thread

I have seen your rebuilt drive before and I must say its very slick! Interesting to hear of someone who has run these spindles at this speed. I will still probably not change the pulley ratio or go...
  29. Re: Boss 8 CNC retrofit and 5 HP upgrade - Build thread

I would not doubt it, however with 4200 as the max speed, I dont have to change any of it, AND I get a full 2 hp over (basically) the entire oem rpm range. If I spin it faster I lose bottom end....
