Re: Chinese Ebay 4th axis Harmonic Drive

Well, it's not so much being Asian rubbish... but more that we are talking about a toy... and a cheap toy at that. Try buying a small Haas rotary and see how many thousands you will have to pay.

Re: expertise needed for toolpath problem

What are you talking about? Your Z height is alternating between -0.1139 and 0.0007 constantly.

What Cam are you using? Simulation will show you this.

    Re: Vectorize this please

What rubbish. Attached is import, trace, export. Less than 1 minute work. If you spent a few minutes you would get the vectors perfect.
A better image wouldn't hurt either.
  6. Re: Looking at a new CNC for home (might build might buy, not sure yet)

Most 5th axis are on the table for this very reason. People often think the most important thing in a rotary is backlash, but the ability to hold the material without movement or vibration is more...
  7. Re: Looking at a new CNC for home (might build might buy, not sure yet)

Lol... I think there's probably a reason why I've been around since 2010 and this is post number 133.

    Anyway... back to the topic...
  8. Re: Looking at a new CNC for home (might build might buy, not sure yet)

Speaking of rabbit holes, AFC is my next challenge... its supported by linuxcnc, but getting it to work is another thing!!

  9. Re: Looking at a new CNC for home (might build might buy, not sure yet)

I actually find that hard to believe. On a 16mm, 3 flute cutter at 100% tooth load, what speed and depth do you run? A good mill isn't 4ton and 10HP (plus) for no reason. Also for micron surface...

Can you cut this on a 4th axis??

This is a 6mm key. Half round and half square. I have the 6mm keyway stock so the challenge is to round the 6mm top. Understand I could do it with a bull nose, but can you do this in a 4th axis...

    Re: taps breaking

Good move. Given Fanuc and Siemens think USB 3 is a modern "new world" interface... it beggars belief how backwards their controllers are.
  14. Re: Looking at a new CNC for home (might build might buy, not sure yet)

I'm in Melbourne and run 3 optimum machines.. all converted to CNC. A BF-46, BF-30, and turner 280. All have cost me thousands in time, effort and money... and was it worth it... no way!!!

    Each...

Re: F360 - spiral toolpath on 4th axis?

I had a play with the multi axis flow tool path last night. As suspected it wont recognize shapes like this as a cylinder, so forget it.
I guess it's worth also pointing out that this limitation...

Re: F360 - spiral toolpath on 4th axis?

My suggestion would be if you want to machine these type of objects on a forth axis, then go get yourself a copy of vcarve.

Re: F360 - spiral toolpath on 4th axis?

Nope.. it's impossible. In this case I would think fusion will not recognize this shape as a cylinder and there is no face to wrap.
I will have a play with this in the next day or two, but you need...
  19. Re: Is a Harmonic Drive best solution for a 4th axis?

A harmonic drive is a flex spline inside an outer spline. There is no adjustment and it does not require angular or preloaded bearings.

BTW a few years ago I simply mounted a motor on a BS-0...

Re: Chinese Ebay 4th axis Harmonic Drive

I would actually be amazed if this is a harmonic drive... However, even a worm drive or direct drive shouldn't move like that. Something is wrong.

I think your options are send it back or pull it...

Apart from that thing is a complete toy, does the motor shaft move in conjunction with the chuck. What you are looking for is the difference of movement between the two,, this...

Re: F360 - spiral toolpath on 4th axis?

You can model/work with meshes in fusion, but just not apply meaningful toolpaths to it. You need to convert it to a solid first; which you can also do in Fusion 360.

Re: F360 - spiral toolpath on 4th axis?

You're not understanding the difference between a mesh and a solid. Fusion cannot machine meshes... so they are not telling you because it's impossible.

You can convert your mesh to a solid that...

Re: F360 - spiral toolpath on 4th axis?

Dislike 360 Design but 360 CAM is unbeatable... so get on board!!

It hasn't been done because as I have tried to explain, Fusion works on faces, not mesh models. Even when 5 axis simultaneous...

Re: F360 - spiral toolpath on 4th axis?

Well... if your processor supports it, then there's no reason why you cant set up a dummy 5 axis and as long as you program your tool position square to the face, form a continuous 4th axis machine...
