Look on Little Machine Shop for mini-lathe kits. They have a metal gear kit that has instructions for removal-replacement of the hi/lo gears. You don't have to buy the kit to get the instructions.

holy s**t! if an 11x26 is a mini-lathe, what do you call a real lathe?

There is a size limit on the gear combinations on all
the 7x** machines. It is something like A+B<=100;
and also for C+D. I have seen the numbers on the
YaH00 7x12 list but can't recall them....

Your new mini-lathe may be usable out of the box (the Sieg
machines have improved in recent years), but it will you serve
better after grooming and tuning.
See mini-lathe.com for step-by-step...
There is a pretty thorough troubleshooting procedure at www.mini-lathe.com
Check it out.

I've been watching the 7x lathes and accessories for several years now (and using one for a couple) and have never seen such a beast.
I'll bet if you had the lathe it wouldn't take too much effort...
Do you really have to hold the wheel by its diameter? Why not mount an arbor in the chuck and put the wheel on that?
For the cross slide travel problem I have no suggestion.

This is the short list. There are many many more. The only limit is Your imagination.

For accurate position, odometry (wheel encoders or ground sensing) is probably not going to be good enough. I have never seen a mobot that could go out 500 body diameters from a home base...
