Re: Extended tailstock upgrade for 1720xmtc

The short travel is a pain for drilling. However my 1720 XMTC is now full cnc with a multifix tool post so I will be able to do this when I get the right tool holder. https://youtu.be/eAXqEfCr5jI

Re: Lathe ER-40 collet chuck for Shoptask

Of course the threads are M10-1.5 not the M10-1.25 that I already bought and then 30mm is too long and the holes in the spindle nose are clearance for M8...

So now the holes are M10 and the bolts...

    Re: Lathe spindle encoder drive

That sounds workable. The locknut uses all the thread and the spindle end is farther in than the pulley.

I'd also need a longer drawbar.

    Re: Nema23 425oz/in steppers for 1720 XMTC?

Closing out this thread - what I ended up with, after issues with in-stock and deliverables, are stepperonline 34HE31-6004S Nema34 units. These are 4.8Nm =679oz/in holding torque. They claim to be

Re: Lathe ER-40 collet chuck for Shoptask

I got around to servicing the lath spindle this weekend, and the only thing holding the nuts on was the tab washer. They weren't even finger tight. No preload whatsoever. So now they have a little...

    Lathe spindle encoder drive

I picked up a 600 pulse quadrature encoder for the 1720XMTC, and I'm scratching my head on how to drive the thing. What have others done?

I'm thinking driving it from the gearbox output which runs...

Re: Lathe ER-40 collet chuck for Shoptask

I had a chance to fit it tonight. It is a better fit on the nose than the 3-jaw. Somewhat more tapping to get it on and off. The holes line up and look to be M10 thread.

    My cheap test indicator...

Lathe ER-40 collet chuck for Shoptask

I've been using an ER-32 collet chuck in the lathe spindle taper for a while and have been wanting to upgrade to a chuck mounted to the spindle nose for a while for the through-stock benefits. All...

Re: collete upgrade to shoptask 1720

I picked up a similar set, but it's not answering the problem of short quill travel and working between short mills and longer drills and wigglers etc. Hard to work through a job without re-clamping...

    Z-axis DRO mount

    1998 1720 XMTC gold
I'm fitting a glass-scale DRO set and attaching the z-axis moving part to the oil-seal ring on the spindle nose - repurposing the quill depth-stop bracket.

    The ring is only...

    Re: Nema23 425oz/in steppers for 1720 XMTC?

using the math here: https://duet3d.dozuki.com/Wiki/Choosing_and_connecting_stepper_motors and the advertised specs and 36V included supply gives 337rpm - and "In practice the torque will drop off...

    Re: Nema23 425oz/in steppers for 1720 XMTC?

Thanks for the science. The cheap-on-ebay set I am looking at are 6.8mH - so those are not so good as "1-2mH, closer to 1mH preferred".

They are, however, so cheap I'm tempted to get them anyway...

    Nema23 425oz/in steppers for 1720 XMTC?

I've had my 1720 XMTC since new - 1998 - and always intended to CNC it but lacked the funds. I have the original CNC hardware kit with the pulley driven Z axis via the fine feed handle. Looking into...

Re: Squaring my Y axis to the X axis

I square mine with a dial gauge mounted to the table and run that across the face of the lathe chuck by moving the Y axis.
