It won't hurt a bit to retract straight up. I've been doing that with standard mills for 50 years...

I just upgraded to VisualMill for Soldiworks, 4-axis. Great software!

You can also use G52 for your Z value differential. It is added/subtracted to the other fixture offsets, e.g. G54,g55, etc.

Is this a true 4th axis? You refer to it as an indexer, which has it's own servo controller and is programmed with M-functions. The true 4th is programmed just as are the x,y&z, e.g. g1 a45. f25....
