Re: VFD on a 25HP Rolling Mill

I like that idea for the simplicity vs. some sort of linear scale. The various parts that we are running have different lengths from the end. I guess that distance can be loaded into a parameter...

Re: VFD on a 25HP Rolling Mill

Thanks Jim, I'm planning on decelerating the motor as I get close to the target length based on scale feedback. If it's tuned correctly it'll come to a smooth stop and perhaps engage the brake at the...

Re: VFD on a 25HP Rolling Mill

Yes, 26:1 gear reduction. However even at that I'm calculating the linear speed (surface speed) at 1700 IPM based on the size of the rolls.
I'd like to decelerate as I get close to the end. I'm...

Re: VFD on a 25HP Rolling Mill

I forgot to mention the motor has a brake so that should help. Maybe I should try stopping it with that and see how consistent it is.

Re: VFD on a 25HP Rolling Mill

Sorry for the late response to all the good info being posted on my thread!
I was thinking over the weekend about how to control it, and using a PLC came to mind. I like the other suggestions as...

Re: VFD on a 25HP Rolling Mill

Thanks SO MUCH Al for the feedback.
I was thinking of putting an encoder on it, but ultimately the length is going to be monitored by a linear scale.
As the workpiece gets reduced in size, the...

Re: VFD on a 25HP Rolling Mill

I think it's currently wired 440. I could do either. I haven't purchased it yet.

Re: VFD on a 25HP Rolling Mill

Hence the reason for the question.
I don't have any experience installing VFD's and before I commit to buying the machine I need to be fairly certain it's going to work.

VFD on a 25HP Rolling Mill

I'm proposing converting a cold-rolling mill to CNC control. The process involves controlling the 25HP AC motor to very slow speed, stopping at a programmed position within an 1/8" (based on linear...
  13. Re: Offering help with Emmegi CamPlus, Drill, and Shape

I decided to buy a custom built machine from a local builder that reads G-code so we can use our CAM software to generate programs from our Inventor files without the limitations of the Emmegi...

    VM30i X-Y Square is off

Anyone have experience setting the X-Y square on a VM series machine?
Just checking before I start pulling covers off.
It looks like the adjustment is made where I circled in the following...

Until I figure out how to delete this post NEVER MIND. I had to change the control to Absolute Tool Lengths
  16. Re: Offering help with Emmegi CamPlus, Drill, and Shape

I'm considering purchasing a Phantomatic T3 Star for machining aircraft extrusions. You'd think they would try harder to sell me on the software. I just want to know (without taking their word for...
  17. OTS Calibration using Deflection Offsets Z- direction FAILS

New to Hurco, & I'm installing tool & spindle probes on our 2015 VM30i with WinMax in an effort to reduce setup times.
Due to availability of service, I'm doing it myself. Done it on other machines....

Re: What BT30 pull studs does a DM2800 use?

You don't need to tighten them to like 80 foot pounds or use red locktite (like some holders I bought). a dozen should do you. Money well spent.
  20. Re: How to set the origin at the corner of the stock?

Thanks for the reply. I ended up drawing a rectangle the size of the stock, at the bottom of the stock, creating a plane for that op, and locating the WCS on the corner, pretty much like you...
  21. How to set the origin at the corner of the stock?

It's been about 10 years since I've used MasterCam.
I'm trying to create a machine origin at the corner of the stock and it's kicking my A$$!
Last software I used was CamWorks, no problem, pick the...

    RW15 Toolholder Orientation

Is there any reason the BT toolholders need to go in the spindle a certain way?
All our holders have a little hole in one key slot and we were told to ALWAYS put that toward the one key in the...
