    I am guessing that the z axis will make bad noises and might even move. Just wire it like the other 2 phases on the motor.

    stepper shudder

    This is common. You probably have a bad connection on one of the 4 stepper motor cables. This sounds just like what i have learned to track down. My ahha system does the same thing.
