Don't change the motor, I understand the 5 wire to be the same as 6 wire with a shared centre tap for two of the inputs.
It should be reconfigurable to use it as 4 wire, just as a 6 wire can be used...

HM32 actually, I forgot the correct name.
I may make a variation on this theme using 4 chevy rods with plate stiffeners, pivoting on steel bars.
I'll put some cad image later after i've finish building my friends router table.
ericks, I bought a HF31, a good lump of iron but may have to downsize when I move house, I've spent more on tooling and fixtures now than buying the machine!!
Hi RobSm, how did it all go? I was nearly going to do this 6 years ago but ended up buying local for an extra $600aud.
I was told of horror stories about freight handlers all wanting their palms...
Little trunnion table on youtube, all japanese but a real gem of a table - has backlash though - needs that thread starter idea of the 2 pinions.

Jaydee80, that is comprehensive. I stumbled across a story of an Aussie guy who built sidecars in Adelaide in a vintage bike mag.
Rex Tillbrook, he built a racing motorbike with twin rotary valves,...
Hi Zhagbox, in Australia you can nearly buy 2 round column mills for the price of 1 square column with the same X and Y table travel. So I think Ians point may be one of absolutes, not accounting for...
Very neat packaging.
If the load stays centred, probably about 200kg, if the load travels to X axis extremity, i'd say 100kg because you are then applying a bending load on the table.
Bent tables are not good.
Keep at it, this my fave area of the zone now. No brand 'x' or brand 'y', just good ideas.
If scan around this site you'll find a guy in the benchtop section, 'Hoss' he sells cdroms with cad plans and instructions to convert X2 and X3 type mills.
Couple this with a geckodrive g250 and...
Did not know that, I always though Fanuc was the source.
I don't get why people ask for Mach3 or Linuxcnc post processors for Mastercam, it's default post processor is Fanuc G code which is the industry standard. Mach3 and Linuxcnc are based on the Fanuc...
Not sure if short stroke is the way to go, i think it burns slower than petrol and needs a high compression and long strong to extract its slow burning properties.
Maybe read up a few of the new...
A Star or Rexroth 1622 or 1623 fits into the the space of the rack for the Z, the casing of the head needs the nuts preloaded to take away any slack on the 115 diameter column.
A 20mm ballscrew fits...
Got that Ian, Scratch Built mini version of Fadal's VMC 15 - YouTube that's impressive stuff.
I've looked into FEA, mind boggling stuff! It wanted an algorithm in order to give a result, the stuff...
I agree concrete will dampen, but i am yet to see a class act machine from fabricated steel utilising it, maybe it's been done and i have not seen it on my radar.
If you start a build log, i will be...
" why don't I just weld up a big structure out of mild steel?", I started down this path and wound up with a chinese mill when common sense prevailed.
Steel is funny stuff, it weighs more than Iron,...
yeah, welding distorts the hell out of everything. Even top tradespeople have problems with it, and square hollow section pipe usually is all over the place with taper and twist.
But don't give up,...
How is it going? (the build)
I had a mental block for a ballnut rotating design, yours came up in a google search, i hope you dont mind if i copy? (the ballnut idea)
Cheers!
Hi Ian, I was originally thinking DIY powerhacksaw. But dragging the blade backwards on return stroke wears out the thick HSS blades very quickly.
About 350 bucks buys an entry level bandsaw, or an...
Well, 3 years on I thought I might rekindle this thread since it already exists.
I have seen a really nice homemade bandsaw on a woodworking forum made with car drums, spindles and with an rhs...
You know,, that side mounted column idea, i was looking at my rongfu clone and seeing fair amount of beef in the front face, maybe extending the y axis dovetail over the old z axis mounting point,...
Without creating a 'fisheye' compression in the corners you will have stretched corners when viewed tangentially.
The open source idea is good, but should be based on hot rodding a rong fu based design so you can use the mill to make parts for itself.
Thats a nice kit, although, I could imagine the aluminum nut mounts buckling under the loads of a collision.
Maybe later in the years i personally would be remaking those with iron or steel.
Good...
All very well informed views on this matter, it would be nice if the software developers could license multiple stations with dongles for the price of a single user, considering all the programming ...
O.k, I think I'll do this, it's not that hard if you use the right mix of donor parts (car parts).
I still need to convert to 3 axis to kick the project along, my Z axis will be a quick and dirty...
Hi Liam, I reckon your build is 1st class, really schmicko!
You have provided everybody with a realistic expectation of harmonic drive abilities.
Most robots they come from are only concerned of...
