  1. Re: Filled aluminium extrusion frame, good or bad idea?

Pete, thank you very much for the input. I appreciate taking the time.
You are right. I shall first try and diagnose than blindly shooting from the hip :P
I think I'll get that mechanics...
  2. Re: Filled aluminium extrusion frame, good or bad idea?

John you are right, the gantry does not have a plate against the back of the extrusions, just the front plate you see.
I'm not really sure what you mean by the "inside edges of the extrusions".
    The...
  3. Re: Filled aluminium extrusion frame, good or bad idea?

    Thanks for your compliment!
Yeah I realize there's somewhat limited view of the construction.
I attached some images of the design to help.
The backbone of the construction is all aluminium...
  4. Filled aluminium extrusion frame, good or bad idea?

    Hi everyone,

I have build myself a CNC router (see image).
The frame is constructed from aluminium extrusions.
I mostly mill aluminium parts on this machine.

The frame is quite stiff, however...

    Re: Incorrect internal feature dimensions

So I have some interesting results.
I measured the diameter of my tool using 3 methods.

    1. Taking a pass on the right hand side of stock, then left hand side. Then measure the part across the cut...

    Re: Incorrect internal feature dimensions

Yeah it's pretty consistent so far (same cutter - same material).
I have been doing the negative stock to leave trick with success.
However I do want to find out what the root cause of the issue is...

    Re: Incorrect internal feature dimensions

I do repeat passes on very feature of importance to make sure that tool/machine deflection is kept under control.

I have not measured the endmill size precisely yet. If it is undersized does that...

    Incorrect internal feature dimensions

    Hi All,

I have built a custom CNC router.

In external features (e.g. bosses) I manage to hit tolerances of +/- 0.05mm

In internal features (e.g. holes / pockets) I get a poor tolerance of...

Re: Issue with shielded wires on DIY machine

    Understood!
Any tips for improvement with the current set-up? I am in no position to restart the wiring as we stand with the proper ground plane and clamp. In particular how can you do a panel mount...

Re: Issue with shielded wires on DIY machine

Apologies for the delay. Had a hectic work week :)

Here's the visio wiring diagram: https://we.tl/t-v2vqJsG2a6

Unfortunately I left it at a semi-finished state (....as you typically do with...

Re: Issue with shielded wires on DIY machine

    Thank you man :)
I do have a wiring diagram yes (bear in mind I am not an electrical engineer though). I need to find a way to access it because I created it in Visio through my previous work and...

Re: Issue with shielded wires on DIY machine

    Thank you Mactec54. That's a good explanation.

I have 1 mains AC cable coming in the controller through an IEC connector which is then distributed by DIN terminals to the following PSUs:

    -...

Re: Issue with shielded wires on DIY machine

Thanks for all the answers guys.

My motor has the drain connected to ground only on one side (controller side).

Can you explain a little more about why the "pigtail" wiring is a bad approach?...

Issue with shielded wires on DIY machine

    Hello,

I recently finished building my controller for a DIY router machine (image attached).

I am using 3x these closed loop steppers:...
