6mm polycarbonate/lexan it is then! Might see about putting some screen protector material in the main firing line which I can replace when it gets too beaten up.
Very nice build spongbob, I...
Hi All,
I've got fed up of sweeping up after my machine (CNC'd Sieg SX3) so I'm in the process of building an enclosure for it. The structure will be 30x30 aluminium extrusion, with a vertical...
Yeh 6082 T6 is what you want for machining, it's by far the most common grade around these parts for aluminium billet. Machines well, decent strength, no issues with anodising, can't really go wrong...
I made a power drawbar for my SX3, here's a couple of videos...

For my latest crazy project, I've been experimenting machining a homemade harmonic drive, and I thought I'd share my progress with you all. For those saying 'harmonic wha?', they're very simple...
Hey Mrpackethead,
I had a similar thought a while back, I already have a 4th axis which I purchased from Arc Euro Trade in the UK, so I'm halfway there already! There is, of course, no 5th axis...
Hi Guys,
Inspired by this video I thought I'd have a go at making a gang tool for my Sieg SX3 mill, took a fair few modifications to the macros and post processor but I finally got it working......
Now that you mention it, once you add on a stand and DRO, it's pretty much the same price as a 280V, would make sense to get the 290V then, best of both worlds :)
Then it's settled, bigger bore it is. Thanks guys :)
Hi all,
I'm looking at getting a small benchtop lathe for a variety of tasks, I've narrowed it down to either a Warco WM 280V or a Toolco 1130GV, I need your help to make a final choice though....
Hi Mactec,
The person I'm doing the parts have is insisting they're hardened for wear resistance. I should point out it's the mold cavity that needs hardening, it's fine if the dowel holes are...
Hi All,
I'm currently making a small 2 part mold that is to be dowelled together, the holes for the dowels are to be reamed to Ø4, however the part also needs to be carburised. I'm concerned the...
Haha, thanks for the correction, must proof read more :)
I'd be a little surprised if the backlash was the cause, there's so much friction in the ways the table won't be rattling around,...
Hi All,
I'm currently making some parts for a friend, which involves cutting a small tapered channel in a piece of mild steel (EN1A/230M07), this tapers from 2.0mm to 0.8mm, I'm using Ø0.6mm 2...
Hi All,
I've been having a problem recently with my SX3, about 1 in 50 times when I flick the power switch on, it trips my houses RCD. It's never had any problems when it's running however. I...
Hey, thanks for the replies, I'm not all that surprised everyone still thinks lapping is a terrible idea :)
I can't move the table by hand at the moment, I've got the gibs at their absolute...
I've recently been looking at trying to reduce the friction in the ways of my CNC'd Sieg SX3, as the high force required to move the table with the gibs tightened is resulting in high backlash...
Oh, and a couple more parts that I've CNC'd since, first up I modified the PSU cover to suit a 120mm fan...

Long time no post :) Been too busy with the conversion to actually document the thing!

A what balance system?!? I hope that's a typo :)
Thanks for pointing out the ProMICA kits, that gives me a bit of confidence, interesting the put the x motor on the rear side of the table, I found...
Great post! Given me a lot to think about...
I should explain why I'm after higher feed rates, I intend on fitting an additional high speed spindle to do some fine machining/engraving work, which...
Hi All,
I’ve had my SX3 for about 6 weeks now so I thought it was about time to start converting it to CNC, and decided I should document it while I’m at it. I’m doing this one slightly different...

Hi All,
I've recently become the proud owner of a Sieg SX3, I've now been through the whole process of disassembling, cleaning and reassembling, and now have a working machine. While I was at it,...
Here's some shots of the clock design so far, lots to do yet, I've not yet decided where I'm going to mount the weight, might have to do some calcs to work out where's best, and I need to think about...
