    Re: Resolvers Vs. Incremental encoders?

Thats awesome! Where do you find the magnetic reader head and the tape? Dual encoder feedback is something I'm super interested in. I want to have the first Tormach with not only servos, but both...

    Re: Resolvers Vs. Incremental encoders?

    Jim,

What controller can you use with that? Is it purely in the realm of newer, high-end machines?

    Resolvers Vs. Incremental encoders?

So which one of these feedback devices is superior? I have used and understand the good ol optical incremental encoders, but the analog resolvers are pretty mysterious to me. How do they relay...

Re: Ballscrew mapping with an addon DRO

    Hi David,
I believe the Tormach uses 840 oz/in 3 phase steppers for all 3 axis. The 3 phase steppers are definitely an improvement. A good stepper version with ratings of 20- 80V and 2-15A would be...

Re: Ballscrew mapping with an addon DRO

Yeah, I took a look at your product and am kinda blown away. This has been a Holy Grail of sorts to eliminate all error and have linear encoders just like the very high end machines. Extremely...

Re: Ballscrew mapping with an addon DRO

Would this allow us to keep the same drivers/ motors?
It would be great to be able to add some encoders and linear scales to greatly amplify the accuracy and repeatability of this machine. How can...
  7. Re: Spindle motor - replace with servo for positioning ?

How big of a servo do you need? I have some large high-torque DC servos that would be ideal for a servo spindle conversion.
  8. Re: FOR SALE- 1100 (Series 3) - Still in Crate - Never Opened....

I'll trade ya my upgraded (to series 3) series 1 plus some cash for a brand new machine. That way you would not be tormach-less. It has the 3ph steppers, emerson VFD, new Path Pilot controller, and...
  9. Re: Probing to find the coordinates of the center of a hole

Ah. So its all about having more than one 0,0,0 start point. Ive made multiple parts in a fixture but did it the hard way I guess. Im assuming you could make 3 totally different parts with this as...
  10. Re: Probing to find the coordinates of the center of a hole

How would this be used in practice? Ive never used G54 or G55.

    Re: Path Pilot servo spindle

Nice. I have some large DC servos that would be perfect. I also have some nema 34 brushless servos that put out 3 times more power and more than double the speed of the current 3ph motor. What kind...

    Path Pilot servo spindle

Can Path Pilot support a servo spindle for rigid tapping, indexing, more speed + power? Would it need to be a +/-10V driver or could it behave as an extra step/dir axis?
  13. Re: CNCDrive AC servo driver powering brushless motors?

I cant find a drive that matches these perfectly. Im sure I could buy a brand new drive that would do just that but im a "used and ebay" sorta guy (low budget).

Does anybody have any info on this?
  15. Re: CNCDrive AC servo driver powering brushless motors?

Would something like this be a better match?

  16. Re: CNCDrive AC servo driver powering brushless motors?

Right. DC uses square wave from the hall sensors and AC uses a sine wave? Is there a sure way to tell them apart? Mine are 170V, 18A, 3000W. This seems incredibly powerful for a NEMA 34 motor around...
  17. Re: CNCDrive AC servo driver powering brushless motors?

My brushless servos are 3ph as well.
  18. CNCDrive AC servo driver powering brushless motors?

I was looking at these drivers and they have the same pinout required by my brushless motors.

Re: 3.23 KW Brushless motor as spindle.

I havent come across a price for a new unit yet. I know it was prohibitively expensive vs shoving the whole machine into a corner.

Re: 3.23 KW Brushless motor as spindle.

    Thanks AL,

And yeah, I kinda wanted to go with AMC for this project. I can see why you're a big fan of them. They seem to have the most bang for your buck on ebay and most will accept the +/-10V...

3.23 KW Brushless motor as spindle.

    Hey guys,

I have a Kollmorgen 3.23kw 3ph brushless motor. It came from a Doosan CNC machining center and is equipped with a resolver I believe (I have no experience with resolvers). When the motor...
  22. Re: Tormach Ballscrew replacement...With bonus question!

    Good morning Keen!

Yes, it has gone from .002 when I got it 4 years ago, and now its up to .006 or so. I have a DRO so its easy for me to compare the readout with the interpolated DRO on PP. First...
  23. Tormach Ballscrew replacement...With bonus question!

    Hi fellow Tormachers!

Well, my machine is almost 10 years old. Its an early series 1 thats been upgraded to series 3 electronics. Im happy to say that mechanically its still solid as a rock. No...

    Servo vs Stepper torque ratings

I recently replaced a 425oz/in stepper with a 90oz/in brushless servo. The servo had much more torque than the stepper did on the same rig even though it was rated far below the stepper's output. Why...
  25. Re: Closing the loop with Path Pilot. Possibly dual (global) closed loop?

In my case I would want them to avoid lost steps and detect any loss of accuracy during an operation. With glass scales you can step up to the accuracy of the grain of the scale. Being able to make...

Sounds like a diamond in the rough. Where did you find this company/ machine? Please PM me if dont feel comfortable posting that info on an open forum. And thanks in advance!
  27. Closing the loop with Path Pilot. Possibly dual (global) closed loop?

Ive been toying around with the idea of adding encoders to the steppers on my upgraded Tormach 1100 pcnc. I know the Mesa 5i25 is fully capable of accepting encoder feedback, as is the LinuxCNC,...

Re: Tormach or Chinese cnc mill?

Definitely superior to the Tormach, which would also be more expensive, slower, and smaller. Repeatability can be improved with screw mapping and a good Kflop setup with glass scales and dual closed...

    PathPilot + Mesa 5125...closed loop

I have this setup with the new Tormach controller and 3ph steppers. I know both LinuxCNC and the Mesa 5i25 are compatable with encoder feedback and true closed loop. Has anyone tried this? Seems...
