4th axis build with Harmonic Drive

I'm starting a 4th axis build for my converted X3 size small mill. After reading up on the topic I've concluded that basing the build on a strain wave gearbox (aka Harmonic Drive) will best meet my...

Re: New DIY build - design suggestions/ideas welcome

Late to the party here, but wanted to chime in to say this is a very stout looking build.

If you'd permit me to ask one question... when you slave two steppers to run the Y-axis, does that require...

Re: Pros and Cons: Extrusions as linear rails

From my perspective, the key ingredient to any machine purchase or build is to have a clue what your want to do with it.

  7. Re: My first post since 2008 - Time to CNC my G0463 after almost a decade of procrast

PS... ever since they created a sub-forum for the X3 machines, the board gets very little traffic.

X3s are the red headed step child and G0704s are "where it's at"

    That and I honestly think...

    Hey Neil...

Check out my (now dated) build thread for ideas on a stand. I'm very happy with the one I built.

I didn't go with CNC Fusion, because of limited resources at the time... but I...
  10. Re: an odd problem... mill "lurches" when changing direction.

OOOOh.... back lash comp is still set on in Mach.... That's probably the problem....

I'll check the gibs as well.

Then I'll prop up front of mill and reach under and loosen, then re-tighten...
  11. Re: an odd problem... mill "lurches" when changing direction.

    add'l info....

I converted the mill using second hand, old, CNC Fusion hardware I purchased from a fellow Zoner years ago.

I had Y axis backlash problems from day one, and I believe they were...
  12. an odd problem... mill "lurches" when changing direction.

    Hey guys,

I am just finishing up an upgrade to my X3 (G0463) with the goal of extending my Y-axis travel and getting rid of grossly excessive backlash (0.018").

    I replaced the Y-axis ball...

    Re: Grizzly G9972Z,G0602,or G0752 Lathe

Then unlike the G0602 lathe, it must not use the lead screw for the power feed, but have a separate power feed gear. I'm referring to the lever labeled S on the page 3 diagram.

My understanding is that Michael has a day job which requires him to travel.

Be patient, either he or his wife will get back to you.

For the X3 mill, this is THEE kit to have.

  30. trim router mounted to quill shaft... options and router selection?

I want a high speed milling option for my CNC X3 (but the question is generic to any CNC mill).

The intended purpose is for cutting wood on the mill, as well as using small cutters on Aluminum.
