    Re: tool wear/cutter comp

Changing tool diameter in the Offsets of the mill is useless unless you're using Cutter Comp in your CAM.
Make sure the tool diameter value is correct in your tool library of the CAM you're using....

Re: Next Gen Control from HAAS

My first calibration was with that function "all in one calibration" or something like that.
Seemed to do OK. My parts are coming out like they should.

I did watch one of the Haas Tip of the Day...

    Next Gen Control from HAAS

I have a 2015 VF4 and just took delivery of a new VF2 last week.
Trying to get going on the new control and I must say.. it pretty much sucks.

I like to do my work offsets using the "Single...

    Re: Watering the mill

Tap water here in Houston is a bad idea.
I'm running Qualichem 250 in the mill and it seems to be doing great even after 8 months. I may change it on the year mark as you say "whether it needs it or...

    Watering the mill

Recently I've started running my mill 10 to 12 hours per day and I'm finding that it's using 4 to 5 gallons of water per day.
Normally I drop in to the local grocery and pick up a few of those 2.5...

    Fixture mounting suggestions.

    I'm about to use a fixture that is 17" x 23" x 1.25" 6061.
    Parts will be 100% plastics.
I'm looking for ideas of how to mount to the mill.

Clamp it in two vises with the jaws on the outside?...
  8. Re: E32 collet not enough for 5/8 end mill in steel?

    Lesson learned!!

I seldom go over 6 to 8 mm in cutter size and ER collets have served me well.
I have a few setscrew holders but didn't have one in 5/8". Rather than sink more money into a job...
  9. Re: E32 collet not enough for 5/8 end mill in steel?

Thanks everyone for the comments and tips.
I ended up going with a shorter collet chuck holder, ramping the feed down to around 30in/min at 3000rpm and running coolant.
    Cut the entire second plate...
  10. Re: E32 collet not enough for 5/8 end mill in steel?

The first collet was toast for sure, the inner diameter was mangled by the collet breaking inside and spinning for the few seconds before I stopped the machine.
I tossed the second as well, never be...
  11. Re: E32 collet not enough for 5/8 end mill in steel?

I was hoping for more advice, less insults.

I own the shop and my father has been dead for a few years.
Upper Middle Class? I retired from a $200K plus job if that qualifies.

    I am not a...
  12. E32 collet not enough for 5/8 end mill in steel?

Been trying to cut some steel using 5/8 end mill.
Cut one without much drama then started on the second. Broke the end mill. Probably due to chatter as it was chattering pretty bad. Broke off in the...

Re: Work offsets not working right anymore

The mill has been running almost non-stop since the calibration. No problems. Well no problems from the Mill, plenty from the operator.
Had a 5/8" end mill just break in the middle of cutting, broke...

Re: Work offsets not working right anymore

Probe was tight, batteries are good.
The values in the macro variables were hosed.
Seems that evening I had a tiny power surge, like a brown out. Just enough to make my UPS click on and off. I...

Re: Work offsets not working right anymore

    haastec, you are the man.

I ran through the probe calibration and all went well.
I clamped a 123 block to the bed and probed a corner of it. jogged away from the part then G90 G00 G54 X0 Y0 and...

Work offsets not working right anymore

In the past I've used the probe to set my offsets and as a sanity check I always use my G54 readout to position the tool at 0,0 and check to see if it's on the corner I just probed.
    I also do this...

Bunch of heat treating businesses in the area. I'll call one on Monday to get an estimate.

Really? You think it will be that bad?
I don't have a torch or oven but I can probably borrow a torch, Get a rose bud and heat it up. Something like 400 to 500 for a few minutes?

    Well, looked up...

    Re: work holding question

that was my original suggestion to him.
Plasma cut the letters and weld them to the plate.
He doesn't want that. I'm not sure why and I didn't ask him.
He's pretty set on having them milled out...

    work holding question

Friend of mine wanted me to machine some plate for him. He wants some raised letters 1/4" high cut from 1/2" plate, sort of a reverse engrave.
First problem is the plate is A36 steel, second is it's...

Re: Why are end mills made in fractions?

Why are end mills made in fractions?

I've had my mill a few months and my lathe at least a month and I'm tired of having to convert fractions to decimal to decide what tool to cut what and what corner radius to use to suit my tools.

Re: Lathe jaws need turned before use?

    Erus,
