  1. Re: Quick question re: threaded wasteboards.

I have Tee nuts but if I was to do it again, I would probably use standard hex nuts. CNC cut the pockets and through holes and then flip the board and fix it down.

Tee nuts often don't have a good...

Re: Designing new Router called Maximus

I've lost track of the width of the gantry.

If it is only 1400mm or so, a ball screw is fine. Just use 10mm plus pitch.

    Great work!

Are you going to fill in the steel X axis with epoxy granite for damping?

Re: 40mm finnish birch plywood CNC-router

No, the G540 is not a controller. Breakout boards are not motion controllers.

The computer software is the controller.

Re: 40mm finnish birch plywood CNC-router

    G540 is not a controller.

It's a parallel port and 4 stepper drivers in a single package.

The controller is the bit that actually determines the movement of the machine. For many that is Mach3...

Re: Designing new Router called Maximus

    Regarding your gutter design:

Have you modelled in the ball screws and nuts? My experience is that the large size of ball nuts often dictates component spacing. E.g 16mm ball nuts are thicker than...

Re: Designing new Router called Maximus

Suggestion (you may have already looked at this): model a larger box section for the Z axis whilst keeping the spindle tucked in as close to the gantry as possible.

Eg a square section rather than...

Re: Designing new Router called Maximus

Much better. I actually wrote part of a post earlier today suggesting you use perpendicular stiffeners (but on the go and didn't have time to finish it).

I recommend you use an 80mm spindle....

    Re: Concrete VMC

To simplify things, there are 3 important factors that determine resonance / vibration of a structure:
    1. Stiffness - increasing stiffness increases the natural frequency.
    2. Mass - increasing mass...

Re: Large Format 5-Axis Gantry Router

The linear rail spec sheets will have specifications for all the allowable tolerances.

What matters is that the two rails are equal. That is why spec sheets don't concentrate on flatness - they...

Re: Large Format 5-Axis Gantry Router

How thick is your epoxy pour?

    I found I needed quite a thick layer. A good 5mm. I remember reading a recommendation for 1/4" (6.35mm) thick layer - can't find the source however.

    There is a...

    Re: Spindle Recommendation

I've spent hours googling for cable clamps to "do it the right away". Found manufacturers, but I am yet to actually find a decent source, particularly at a reasonable price.

Re: Best CNC Cutter for 21mm pine

For CNC, spiral carbide bits are generally what you want.

Compression bits have an upcut tip and then most of the bit is downcut. This means if you are doing a full thickness cut, you get a clean...

Re: CNC Plasma Table Questions - Suppliers

Use low inductance NEMA23's. You want speed, not torque. Bigger steppers are generally poor at high speeds.

Use 10mm pitch ball screws at the least, maybe higher. Mechanical resolution won't be...
  16. Re: help me to design steel frame for my 10' X 5' CNC router

Where in the world are you?

I'm very surprised that a place exists where you get can large sheet metal and bend / form it but you can't get some simple rectangular hollow section.
  17. Re: Fixed Gantry CNC Mill for cutting Aluminium and softer materials

    Agree with extent.

Rails should be spaced more like:
    1/4 table width - rail - 1/2 table width - rail - 1/4 table width
  18. Re: Fixed Gantry CNC Mill for cutting Aluminium and softer materials

You will not reach your desired tolerance (0.01mm) with your design and intended hardware.

That level of tolerance requires a lot to achieve. Linear scales, servos with high encoder counts, ground...
  19. Re: Yet another 3 axis CNC Router Design/Build

I don't understand the benefit of using aluminum extrusion with steel bolted on the outside.

    Just use steel.

Re: ZENFORD ZEIGLER Vertical Mill retrofit

Out of curiosity, how much space does the Zenford occupy? In particular how tall is it?

    Re: UPGRADRE RIGIDITY Z AXIS

15mm linear rails would be more than enough.

Linear rails should not be used to add rigidity. The structure must be rigid.
