Re: Force on the ball/lead screw

I'm starting to realise now how irrelevant my initial question was. I'm actually at a stage where I can start making stuff. Still just on my L plates but I reckon I can improve the finish and...

Re: Force on the ball/lead screw

Yeh, there was a ton of movement in that direction (tilting of the gantry) so I didn't bother to check the sideways (x axis) deflection.

Yes, and knowing where the flex is coming from is the key. Seeing that bit of slowmo helps

Re: Force on the ball/lead screw

Yeh, i know. This forum doesn't rate hobbyist... or is it hobby machines... or is it both :D

I did some work on rigidity. It's better though i reckon i can still tweak it just a little more. ...

Re: Force on the ball/lead screw

I'll try remember those rules of thumb... and nominal chip load (Fz) I didn't know what that meant or that there was a recommended by the tool maker.

The chip load you mention seems very high. ...

Doh! Good question. I didn't pay attention on the first run (maybe 2) but after that I went the Max available for this spindle which is 12k

Re: Force on the ball/lead screw

This weekend i got to run this little cnc again after some modifications. Sorry i'm not in the league of the vast majority of this forum (i'm a new to the industry and a hobbyist at that).

Re: Force on the ball/lead screw

This got me wondering, is there a rough cut off point that steppers are more suitable than servos e.g. size / rigidity if a machine or is it more aligned with what material is being cut e.g. wood vs...

Re: Force on the ball/lead screw

Lol, I'm going to try remember that unit of measurement and use it

The "tensor and Eigen" speak is a little above my pay grade but everything else you said is very helpful. I do have a...

Re: Force on the ball/lead screw

Peteeng (Pete the engineer..?) How does one test rigidity? If that is the factor that determines what motors/electronics then there must be a way of gauging how stiff = what motors...?

Re: Force on the ball/lead screw

Thanks for all that explanation Craig.

I think I'll use this machine as is for a little longer and see how I feel about it after a few months. I don't really want to spend money on it now only to...

Yeh I can understand when trying to make money then speed is key. I'm definitely a hobbyist. Not looking to make/ build a machine but wondering how suitable the stock steppers are on my recent (few...

Re: Force on the ball/lead screw

I feel like I have a better understanding of the differences between stepper and servo now.

I know I'm new to this but the feed rates you mention seem awfully high...?? Is that for milling wood?...

Re: Force on the ball/lead screw

Aah yes I've read the closed loop servo is the shiznit. I was thinking their biggest benefit is at high speed which I didn't think was too important to me since I'm learning. Acceleration seems to...

Re: Force on the ball/lead screw

Lol, you're right I am surprised by that. That seems like the most likely point when steps get missed.

Do closed loop steppers help with missed steps or do they just do catch up after the fact?

Thanks Craig. I wasn't even thinking about acceleration, thanks for the tip. That's just another variable when trying to work out torque needed for the stepper. I need to refer to the stepper...

    Force on the ball/lead screw

I've got this feeds and speeds app on my phone, it gives all kinds of data. It gives a calculation on "cutting force". If the direction of cut lined up with the an axis / ball screw then that...

  21. Re: Which motion control / software for a combo machine?

That's handy info and not something that's easy to find out, thanks.

  22. Re: Which motion control / software for a combo machine?

  23. Re: Which motion control / software for a combo machine?

Doh! Are you trying to make it harder for me to decide :p

Gary did down play uccnc but he also gave props to Wincnc. Obviously I don't know of any affiliations between members and companies. ...
  24. Re: Which motion control / software for a combo machine?

I think I've narrowed it down to centroid. Uccnc probably has more flexibility but I think centroid is more suited to me as a beginner. I've been trying to read lots the last few days. Here's some...
  25. Re: Which motion control / software for a combo machine?

  27. Re: Which motion control / software for a combo machine?

That's good news. Thanks OlfCNC. I'm warming to uccnc. It also has 6 asxis control so one day I could add something like a tool turret.
  28. Re: Which motion control / software for a combo machine?

  29. Which motion control / software for a combo machine?

    Hello

I've got this machine I want to build but silly me, i'm a complete beginner  Please be kind.

I'd like to setup a 4th axis on an encoded servo to be used as both a lathe and...
  30. Re: Hello and I want to add a power feed to my SC3

Thanks for the suggestion. I guess an electric window motor will have low revs for the task too. Sounds easy enough. I'll try find some others who have done this on YouTube.
