    My (limited) understanding was that for VFDs the shield is meant to be connected at both ends.

    For most other purposes it's at the controller box end or vigorously debated.

    I've lost track of the width of the gantry.

    If it is only 1400mm or so, a ball screw is fine. Just use 10mm plus pitch.

    Much better. I actually wrote part of a post earlier today suggesting you use perpendicular stiffeners (but on the go and didn't have time to finish it).
