you can also use a fixed rod in place of the laser and do a physical contact trace of the part then offset the spline (the diameter of the rod) that is created in your dxf file

the unit i am talking about uses a laser pointer and material does not effect the process. the encoding is done through a magnetic strip that reads x,y in relation to the location of the laser.

My brother was in force injection plastics and he would probably know. But the molds they used where for very precise parts like the frame from the razor phone. I will see him thursday.

I don't know if anyone got back to your thread, but the price tag might be a bit of an issue for that resolution. The good news is that most of the cad programs have plugins that handle stl. files....

the scanners are accurate but the data needs to interpreted. Rapidform has great software but it is not cheap. We offer scanning as a service but we are in the northeast.
