The tabs on the bottom do not show layers. You can setup multiple layout tabs with a viewport in each tab that will show one layer at a time. (using Current VP Freeze).

My first thought is to first Create all the layers you need.
Then click on a part and use the property (ctrl-1) box to change the layer.

How many parts are there?

Are the parts individually selectable (ie are they solids or wire frame)?

Brian, Nice work. I have a similar size machine with two 3/4" drill rods for the Y axis. Never had any vibration problems. What kind of bearings are you using on the slides?
