  1. Re: Heat-treated 4130, tempered at 400°F: will it hold?

Also, I wonder if being inside of a tree surrounded and supported by wood, the angular deflection of the shaft will be somewhat less than what has been calculated?
  2. Heat-treated 4130, tempered at 400°F: will it hold?

    Hi all,
So I am trying to replicate a tool known as an increment borer. It is a hollow shaft with hollow cutting threads on one end meant to screw into live wood and extract a 16"-long core sample....

Re: Boring a 2-in long, small tapered hole

I've managed to lose the tip on three of my five boring bars in the past. I don't think BUE was the issue because I had plenty of coolant and very conservative parameters. If the surface speed was...

Re: Boring a 2-in long, small tapered hole

The radius of the tip is 0.003", so would 0.006" be a good depth of cut in your estimation? My original parameters were 0.004 DOC, 300 SFM, and 0.001 IPR feed.

Boring a 2-in long, small tapered hole

    Hi all,
I am an undergraduate student at WPI needing to cutting a certain oddly-shaped hole as part of an independent study project. The material being cut is normalized 4340 chromoly steel. The...
  6. Re: Boring a 0.256" by 16+" - 30+" hole through M2/A2 tool steel

Since I only have access to what my university has (CNC lahtes and mills, etc (but no gun-drill)), I think I resort to buying the pipe and then machining it from there with the threads either welded...
  7. Re: Boring a 0.256" by 16+" - 30+" hole through M2/A2 tool steel

I guess that could work as long as the tubing can stand up the the torque required to drill torque hard wood (which can be pretty tough at times). According to the company located in Sweden, the...
  8. Boring a 0.256" by 16+" - 30+" hole through M2/A2 tool steel

    Hi,
I just joined a CNC machine club at the university I am attending and am new to CNC machining. How would one go about drilling a 0.250" - 0.256" diameter by either a 16+" or up to 30+"...
