You need to do a plane selection to get the feeds to work independently, if i was at work i have notes on it but sorry not much more help from home. But it can definetly be done.
I have ran a couple different hardinge CNC lathes and they are very user friendly. I think you would be very happy with it. They also seem to hold up well to crashes.
