Seasons greetings all!
I'm not sure if this will be useful to anyone here, but I'm guessing that I would have found it at least interesting when I was setting out to build our 8 x 4ft steel and...
Working great now. Changed up the ballscrews for something much lass bent, better quality and 20mm pitch. Which of course if I was to do over would be more like 15 or 10!
Well, thanks for the encouragement! I must say I felt a bit down about the reading earlier today... But hay, I do know it can cut steel, it might not be amazing at it, but it works. I did always plan...
Hey thanks :D
The surface replication worked perfectly for me. I didn't really know what to expect going into it, but yeah - no complaints on that front.
w.r.t. stiffness: I don't think it's in...
If you see my concrete incorporated build you realise I have the opposite problem :wee:

Following along, nice build so far. I like that you did a better job than me of resisting the urge to go crazy with the vibration damping until you see how things are performing. In my case, it would...
Thank's Pippin, yeah I need to spend some time sealing up all the ballscrews etc before I dare do much more cutting, of metals at least...
PS I could really do with some advice about ballscrew protecting for this setup. I have bodged up a wiper for the rotating ball nuts of the long axis, using a glue gun 'casting type method...But it's...
Hi All,
So a long time ago I started making a weird gantry. Thought some might get a kick from seeing how it went together.
It's a composite aluminium, steel and epoxy-granite beam, with cast Al...
Hey Mactec, thanks :) It's obviously not as continuous as I would like, but there it is. Gotta try and keep the ball rolling now
Hi all,
This is something of a reboot project. I started it years ago and life got in the way.
Here's what I have so far:
A big steel frame, made from old I beams and 100mm box. The I beams are...
I tried something very similar on one of my chainsaw cylinder stove fans (the HTS 2000 brazing rods). I found them very fiddly to use and had mixed success. You can watch a video of my attempts here:...
Awesome to behold! How did the servo tuning go for the duel x drive? Do the servos track each other perfectly when slaved? I am making a duel ballscrew x-axis, and am umming and ahhring about...
Hi Jumper. Have been following along with your awesome build - very inspiring!
I am making something a bit similar. One question: your's is the first use of levelling epoxy I have seen that added...
Thanks for the tip. Haven't tried it on the mitre saw but used some on the bandsaw while cutting the bracing inserts. Made the corners much easier & less heat buildup. :)
Good point, that is something of a concern. However because the epoxy is in small bands running vertically, rather than along the length I don't think this will be significant,,, I will look into it...
Interesting, thanks, what kind of wax do you recommend?
Hey Trailerparkboys, thanks.
Well I cut a few more bracing inserts tonight, and to space them every 20mm I will need to up the pace significantly AND spend the rest of my life cutting them,
...
Hey Trailerparkboys, thanks.
Well I cut a few more bracing ins
I got confused.
Thanks for letting me know. Hmm. Have edited, hopefully they work now.
Ooop. That's what you get when you try and reply on a tiny phone. Sorry A_Camera,
Ok so, I'm not saying I am going ahead with this plan, you have raised some very real concerns - thanks guys. ...
Ah ha. Copy that bigdogbro, am definitely in the 2 screw on table y axis camp. Also like centre to be clear so I can mount work vertically extending below.
Ok so I couldn't resist bringing the Aluminium into the shop and giving it a little clean down. I only had a quick probe at it with the feeler gauge and straight edge, but it actually seems...
Hi bigdogbro. So if I understand you right, are you suggesting 2 Ballscrews - one on top and one below the gantry structure? I planned for two ballscrews on the y axis - the long 2.4m one. And a...
Me too! Even more a fan of free, which is what the crazy profile configuration would be.
Sorry Wizard, I meant that it would be more work to do the jointing plan outlined above. I agree...
A camera, yep important point. I will be shooting for something way more accurate than to the nearest mm as well. I have to say though I'm rarely an 'off the shelf' kinda guy... I think if I don't...
Thanks A Camera! That clarifies the alignment issue somewhat... I wonder how crucial that will be, if I then end up flattening the rail mounts with steel filled epoxy anyway? Obviously I can't get...
Hi plcamp! Thanks for the message. This is what I need, a bit of critical input, thanks!
Lets see if I can convince some of you, and myself, and then maybe it will be a workable idea :)
I agree...
Hi Trailerparkboys!
Thanks for the response. I had just the same thought regarding the flimsy section and not quite ideal profile for mounting... At the same time it is quite a beefy weight of...
Hello everyone.
So I am finally taking the plunge and building a machine. I want it to do hardwoods with ease and really hope it to cope with aluminium.
At present the plan is for a beefy welded...
