2" facemill with 4 flutes testing on aluminum. My max cut is about .015" before spindle runs out of muscle.
Pretty happy with the finish.
Spindle is still working well.

After rebuilding my z axis plate, i now have room for both spindles.
I flat topped a stainless steel slide like butter. I think it has plenty of power for my needs.
I have no complaints about the finish either. Amazing for ebay parts and scrap steel!
I see...
The only issue i had with the spindle is when i flipped the motor to the topside, the belt was misaligned and had to shim the spindle gear up a bit. Easy fix.
I also had to take an die grinder and...
Yes. My vfd came in yesterday, i just got it wired and programmed up the vfd.
It works good. I took a few thou off my old vise jaw to clean it up . The lengh of cut was 1" on a 1/2" endmill...
My guess is the thin belt width (9/16") and gears are the limitations on motors horsepower sizing.
I will see if i can find some gears that will support a wider belt and then think about upgrading...
You may be right. I am not planning to do a bunch of heavy hogging at all. Small bites in steel and aluminum..
Well see, thanks sir!
Double post
Yes, its 60 hz and there is a fan blade in the back of the motor. I have a 110v 1/2hp motor i can adapt if this one does not work well.
Its says its 110v 3 phase. I have a 110v 3 phase vfd coming...
Not sure on delta or wye configuration tho
After further review, i was wrong. Its totally 3 phase
Yeah, Unfortunately, its only 110v, single phase with 2 amp draw.
Closer.
This motors rpm is fixed at 8000rpm, they offer the same one with different gears and belts that is 3000rpms
Search bt30 8000rpm power head spindle and i went with a us seller in cali , yokimm
Very fast shipping.
I took a chance on that bt30 ebay spindle.
Looks like it should work fine..
I am still rebuilding my Z axis rails so I have not cut anything yet, but it sure sounds different when hitting it with a rubber mallet.
I filled my gantry void with epoxy, sand and several sizes of gravel/pebbles. The gantry took less than a cubic foot. My base fame will need about 4 cubic feet.
I am also replacing my round...
This spindle unit looks like it could work? . 8k rpms and mentions milling steel.
I would probably need to switch to the square linear rails instead of my round rails for my z to get any tight...
Thats got a decent RPM range that i havent seen before, thanks. I will bookmark that for another day...
Thanks Sir! I have not seen much for low rpm spindles either. I see some interesting 5 bearing power heads with reduction gearing. ( might be interesting) would bumping up to 2.2kv+ 4 bearing ...
When i said adding sand, i meant like an 80-90% sand and 20-10% epoxy mix. As in i am not trying to make it look like granite.
Any spindle recommendations?
Ive decided to fill the void/hollow area in my gantry with epoxy granite. Then i will fill my Ibeam base voids.
That might dampen some of my harmonics.
Since none of it will be visible,...
Childhood dreams coming true.
Howdy all!
Its been a while since ive posted. I have been focusing on learning fusion360 the last few months. Im getting to where i can draw what i need to keep moving forward.
I decided to...
Machine is still working perfectly. I took apart an old dayton 2 axis vise and used the top part as a low profile vise.
