  1. Re: Eliminating tool markings on profile operations - full depth finish pass?

as far as tool not having the flute length of the thickness of the part, either get a longer cutter or run your finish pass in 2 depth cuts and rub the top of your endmill, if its a high speed...
  2. Re: Eliminating tool markings on profile operations - full depth finish pass?

16 depth passes? How deep are you profiling? 20ipm on a 2 flute? is it carbide? hat size is it? 20ipm and a 2 flute sounds awfully slow, what machine are you running? you can run an uncoated...
  3. Re: Machining 4340 flame cut......Tips Anyone?

for the record flame cut 4340 is not even hard.... the max rc is gonna be like a 25-30rc, an indexible will plow right through that with no problem.
  4. Re: Machining 4340 flame cut......Tips Anyone?

after you get the block send it out and have it annealed and stress releaved. cut like butter. shouldnt cost but $50 to have that done if you dont have an oven.
  5. Re: Seeking advice on decent speeds and feeds for ramping in 4140

your sfm is too high for 4140 and slotting, is it 4140 or is it prehard 4142? either way, small endmills hate 4140. is 1/4" your maximum tool size? you say its ramping at .15 degree, that doesnt...
  6. Re: Machine Shop claims they can't mill my part, hardened steel mold die, help!

i know this thread is old but, out of all the machinists here nobody chimed in and said a d2 mold can be machined? I machine hard d2 all day long everyday, and thats at 60-61rc. a2 is even easier.
  7. Re: help, big fixture, 112 helix bore tool paths

thinking of just using a contour, depth cut(not 2d ramp) plunging at 30-40ipm with a 40ipm feed .125 depth cuts and finish pass at bottom at 30% speed and feed and lead out to center of bore. ...

Here goes, the part im trying to make faster is a 3"x3"x14" block of d2, it has a step on each side of the block, one step is 1" wide x 1.02" deep and the length of the part (14"). the other step...
  10. Re: Drilling Aluminum / cutting - Feed rates and RPM - Can't keep braking bits =(

9,000rpm and 50 ipm? Where did you come up with those feed rates? if its a 2 flute thats .003 chipload.... it should be between .0005 and .001 for an 1/8" cutter. I guess at only .02 depth of cut you...
  11. Re: Drilling Aluminum / cutting - Feed rates and RPM - Can't keep braking bits =(

1/8" deep with an 1/8" endmill? Good luck with that, thats not going to happen.
