Red face Steppers making noise but not spinning my lathe chuck...any advice?

Hi. I am making a lathe to use with glass. These require head and tail stock to turn in unison and they are VERY expensive so Im making my own.
Could use advice on my new setup.

I know the wiring is correct and when I turn the dial it whirls faster and slower but doesnt turn the shaft. Here are my specs. Any advice?

    NEW SPEED CONTROLLER
    Input: DC 7.5-24V
    +24V input
    +5V output

    NEW SWITCHING POWER SUPPLY
    24V
    5A

    NEW CONTROLLER
    Output current: 0.5A-4.0A
    Input Voltage: 9-42VDC

NEW STEPPER MOTOR WITH LATHE CHUCK
    2phase nema23 stepper motor
    4.2V
    3 A

By ''whirls'' do you mean the motor is making noise but the shaft is not turning?

Post links to your hardware. Maybe some pictures of your setup.

Normally glass lathes have a splined shaft drive between the headstock and tailstock.

Yes, its off the lathe right now. It makes a whirling sound when I turn up the speed controller ...goes into a higher pitch as I turn it up. But it vibrates and the shaft wiggles back and forth but no spinning. I am including the wiring diagram I used for the speed controller. I can crank the pulley by hand no problem.

Are your Pulse & Direction signals reversed by chance?

    Wires double checked ok..
I put my multimeter in line with the + lead that goes into the motor and it only read 0.10 amps. This seems like the problem yes? (I ordered a cheap power supply from ebay)

    Hi guys,
I am using Long Path Tool. you can try also. It very easy to use.
    Thanks!

I don't think a multimeter would tell you much. Which + lead? There are two, A+ and B+

Is the power supply maintaining 24V output when the motor is trying to run?

Make sure your motor windings are connected correctly (one winding between A+ and A-, the other one between B+ and B-).

You can also disconnect the DIR signal temporarily, just in case there is something funny going on with your speed controller.

The As and Bs are paired and installed correctly and the supply puts out a constant 24V. Should I be paying attention to the controller dip switches? Thanks

I would start by setting the DIP switches to 1/2 step and motor rated amps.

You definitely should, although you should see some kind of rotation with pretty much any switch settings. Set the current to 3A and the microstepping to 1:8 for starters.

Does the motor lock up (gets hard to turn by hand) when the power is on?

Does the speed controller have any switches or menu settings?

Have you tried disconnecting the DIR signal?

I got it...I was reading the continuity option on my multimeter wrong and the motor wiring pairs were off....DUH.....persistence pays
Thanks for the replies folks. Stay healthy.

Glad you got it solved! If I may ask, what kind of glassware are planning to make with your new lathe?

Hi. I am working with scientific glass operations, flasks and tube inserts that sort of thing. Here is a pic of my lathe so far. Both the head and tail need to turn in unison.
You cant get one of these for under $5k....at the very least...its rather ridiculous. I am converting an old wood lathe I got from a garage sale. You can see I am also using some cross slides
I also picked up for a few bucks at garage sales to allow me to line things up properly. The stand is from a harbor freight metal brake I never use.
