Raspberry Pi 400 and TNG - perfect combination?

I'm running some tests with RPi400 and TNG and it works perfectly.

Did you adapt any specific settings?
I tried TNG on a 8GB Raspi 4 a few weeks back and it was just too sluggish to work with on a regular basis. It was working but it was really a unpleasant experience.
The GUI was typically lagging quiet heavily behind when running a typical adaptive toolpath.

    Best Regards,
    Klaus

There are possible reasons for your bad experience. Here are my guidelines for perfect RPi system which runs just as good as my "top of the line" PC with Win10. Only thing worse is full screen resize but this is rarely used at all.

    1. RPi4 is much better than RPi3. RPi3 is good enough, but RPi4 is much, much better.
    2. Use 4Gb version or more. More memory, larger g-code can be shown on 3D display.. 4Gb is enough for millions of g-code lines.
    3. Use original Raspberry Pi OS (ex Raspbian). It is highly optimized and performs much better that other operating systems.
    4. RPi4 with original Raspberry Pi OS does not need any changes in config.txt. Just install and it works.
    5. Proper cooling is essential. RPi4 heats a lot and good cooling fan is mandatory. Without good cooling it overheats and CPU throttles down. You need to monitor temperature. Anything above 70°C is too hot and you need better cooling. New RPi400 does not have any cooling issues.
    6. With proper cooling you can increase display refresh rates. "Settings/User Interface/Refresh Rate" and "Settings/User Interface/3D/Refresh" can be set to 50. Check temperature after modifying this setting. Those two settings greatly improve UI experience. Default values are very conservative.

We have several RPi based systems working in industrial environment and there are no significant drawbacks. If it doesn't work for you then you are doing something wrong.

    Thanks for the Info.
Setting the refresh rates did the trick.

btw: having a good passively cooled case works fine for the the pi4 as well. Keeping the Temperature below 60° during full CPU load is quiet easy with a full Aluminium Case that acts as a Heatsink for the important Components of the pi, no fan required. TNG does not stress the pi 4 extensively, so its running much cooler anyway. I mean we all have access to great CNC Machines here, so its quiet easy to make on ;-)

Is there a way to control the RPi from the PC like OctoPrint?
And is the RPi4 good for the old CNCUsbController too?

Easiest way to remotely control the raspi would be a remote desktop solution LIKE VNC for example.

I use this on windows. Works fine.

No, old CNCUsbController works only on Windows.
