    2.2KW VFD driving 1.5KW Spindle

    Hello everyone!
    Wondering if some could tell me if I would have any trouble using my 2.2KW VFD with a 1.5KW Spindle.

    Cheers,
    Bran

    No trouble at all, in fact if using single phase power supply that is the correct way to be doing this install

    Thanks a lot! So do i just lower the amps on the VFD to 6 amp ? 6 x 220V = 1320 watt

    No you have to use the motor spec's, so the Parameters would be set to suit the spindle motor spec's and this is important or you will damage the VFD Drive or the spindle, this can happen no matter what the VFD Drive size is incorrect Parameter settings are the cause of most failures

    How does one learn about that ? these are the specs for the spindle

    Power: 1.5 KW,
    Voltage: 220V~250V,
    Frequency: 400 Hz

    I know how to set the max hz to 400 on the VFD and its a 220V VFD. Im assuming i have to lower the amps but i am new to all this

    Hello.

    I agree with mactec54, a misconfigured drive is a good source of problems.

    I also think you should check for the fuses and/or thermal breakers and have them selected accordingly. They are your last line of defense should a problem arise.

    As the drive is capable to deliver higher current than your motor requires imagine a situation where the motor gets stalled. The only way for the drive to know is by the current increase. Yet if misconfigured it may try to deliver it effectively burning the motor and probably itself.

    Note: the previous assumption may not be correct if there is some sort of feedback from the motor to the drive. However I always prefer to be safe than sorry.

    I hope this helps.

    Regards.

    You have not said what the Brand name and model # is of the VFD Drive there are a set of Parameters you need but I need the VFD Drive spec's

    Re: 2.2KW VFD driving 1.5KW Spindle

    The VFD is a Hy Series HY02D223B https://bulkman3d.com/product/spk-2200/

    The spindle hasn't arrived yet and i didn't have much of a choice in Australia, due to covid-19 no one has stock.
    The write up says -
    1.5kw
    400hz
    220V~250V
    8000-24000 R/min
    And assuming the picture is of the actual unit i can see printed on the spindle case "5 AMP"

    Any help is greatly appreciated as i said im just learning about all this,

    Thanks

    Do you have the manual for the VFD drive if so how are the Parameters listed are the first part of the Parameter listed as PD_____ if so you have the real HY VFD Drive there are a lot of copies that is why I'm asking

    The link is for a 2.2Kw the spindle you have ordered is a 1.5Kw water cooled or air cooled

    Hey Mactec thanks for baring with me, yes the parameters begin with PD.

    The spindle ive ordered is 1.5KW air cooled. The link was just to display the VFD i have, sorry for the confusion.

    Basically the 2.2kw spindle that came with the VFD was way to heavy for my machine so i sold it and downgraded to a 1.5kw air cooled. I was unable to get a 1.5kw Huanyang, there just isn't any where with stock in Australia. But the specs for the one ive ordered are as quoted.

    This is what you need to start with for Parameter settings and input wiring, there may have to be some changes once you have it running

    Huanyang Mactec54
    I recommend that you use a EMI Power Filter this would be mounted close to the input Power connections of the VFD Drive Here is a good one to use
    TDK Lambda RSEN2030L this is a EMI Rated Power Filter

    Input Wiring R =Live/ Hot T Neutral in your case and Ground to the Ground Terminal

    1.5Kw 400Hz 220v Water Cooled / Air Cooled

    PD000=0 for Parameter unlock ( 1 ) for Parameter Lock

    PD001=0 (1 For Remote Control) ( 1 For 0-10v Terminal Control or Remote Trim Pot Control ) ( J1 Also Needs to be set for Terminal Control )

    PD002=0

    PD003=400

    PD004=400

    PD005=400

    PD006=125

    PD007=20

    PD008=220 (Motor Rated Voltage)

    PD009=69

    PD010=11

    PD011=150 ( 100 Minimum Setting with Quality VFD, 120 is Safe for Water Cooled )
    (Air cooled 150 depending on Temperature this may be lower )

    PD13= 08 ( Is for Factory reset, Only use this to set VFD to Factory Default Settings )

    PD014=8 ( Acceleration Adjust to suit)

    PD015=8 ( Deceleration Adjust to suit) ( PD15 is ignored IF PD26=1 Then the Spindle will Coast to a Stop)

    PD120=120 ( Stall Prevention )

    PD141=220 ( Motor Rated Voltage )

    PD041=8 ( Carrier Frequency max up to 10 )

    PD142=6 ( Motor Max Amps for 1.5Kw Spindle)

    PD143=2 ( Motor Number of Poles)

    PD144=3000 (Max Motor RPM) =3,000= (24,000)

    PD70=0 ( This may need to be set to 1 if Control Voltage is 0-5v )

    PD72=400

    PD73=150 ( 100 /120 Minimum Setting Water Cooled AIR Cooled 150 )

    PD120=120

    PD174= (Set to Max VFD Drives Output Amp Rating )

    PD006 and PD009 may need to be changed depending on the minimum Frequency Speed setting PD011 and PD73

    Hey Mac, just had a quick question. I did all your settings seems to be working, the only thing is i cant push past 275HZ. I read that i want to hit about 330hz for plywood so im wondering if something in your settings has capped the Hz cause my spindle shouldn't be pushed past 275 for safety

    Thanks again man

    How are you controlling the speed from your computer or from the Pot on the VFD Drive

    PD070=1 also for Pot control J1 Jumper also needs to be in the correct position this jumper is beside the Terminal block
