    Removing IH 3HP/3PH motor

I have to move my IH mill to a truck and want to first remove the 3HP/3Phase motor from the gear head housing so that an engine hoist can lift it high off the ground. I know there are bolts that need to be unscrewed. But, I am concerned with the wires. What will I have to do to disconnect the electrical wires from the motor that goes into the gearbox housing (cut wires?)? Also, how long are these wires since I may want to place the motor on the floor (very heavy) before working on the wires.

    Thanks,

Their is a connection box on the side of the motor. Take the cover off and take a picture of the wires then disconnect the wires.

With the wires free just remove the 4 bolts and lift the motor off.

If you run the box down to the table and set the spindle against a piece of wood, the lift can be attached at the top of column and the center of gravity will be low enough to help stabilize it all, just be sure to run your lifting straps from under it for support and around the column a few times and loop if front of column just short of the top. The object is to cradle it so it can not move or pop out of the cradle. I found that putting bars into the bolt holes in the sides of the base are a good mounting location for lifting. But the column must be locked into the lifting loop or it will topple over.
