    I had to re-wire all of the encoders. I soldered the encoders wires to the corresponding wires that lead to the control. It was a helter-skelter color mix-match, but now the green wire for the encoder is the green wire at the 9pin connecter.

    Unhappy

    Two steps Forward, One step Back.
    It took great effort, but I managed to drop a screw into my y servo. I took the cap off of the dynapar E15 encoder to remove it to pull the cap off of the servo. Retrieved the screw and replaced the encoder. Thats when I noticed that the Red and Black wires had broken off of the board at the solder. I can't tell where each wire went.
    Worst case, I have a 50-50 chance of getting them back in the right place. I'll put a call into Dynapar monday to see I they can tell me which way the wires go.

    One possible way is to identify any IC and look up the data sheet on it and check continuity from the IC +5 pin to either of the broken wire points, same with the IC common, this is a fairly conclusive way.

    I can't find out which side of the terminal is positive for the 120 vac power that goes into my BOB. Does it matter?

    Do I need to place my e-stop so that it only kills power to the spindle and motors or do I need it to kill the power to the BOB and drivers as well?

    I also have the spindle brake enable when I hit the estop.
    I turn off power to the drives and spindle but leave the
    bob on .I have the estop on the bob working.

    You should have 2 circuits.

    You should have a smaller 'Reset' Button that triggers the Reset input to mach.
    Mach shuts down the spindle its self when you hit the reset, but the drives still hold.

    Also, a Big 'Estop' kill button that turns off power (on AC side) to drives and spindle.

    You rarely hit the Estop (only in Emergencys) , but you use the 'Reset' all the time to stop the machine while cutting to make changes'

    Trying to run the Hyperterminal program. The Vipers came with a programming cable that has a 9 pin connection. I hooked that up to comm port 3 and put the parameters in, but nothing happens. Do I need an adapter to go to the rs232 connection?

    I powered up the x axis and it held with a little resistance to movement in both directions, so I assume I'm on the right track!

    Be sure to set the Connection settings to
    Baud 9600
    Bits 8
    Stopbits 1
    Parity none
    and Flow control to 'None'

    Try the other com ports ( 1 ) if it has it. Make sure the plug on the drive is not pulled sideways making a bad connection.

    Yes sounds like the drive is holding, so the encoder is hooked up right

    Pins are not bent. I took some pictures and posted at [url]http:\\bullyztoyz.smugmug.com. I went to the help screen for hyperterm and it said to type in ate1{enter} to find out if the modem was working. It came back with "ok". It won't let me type in anything except the "ate1". If I change to port 1 it won't let me type anything in.
    What wire to pin config do I need to make for this to work on the 25 pin connection?

    Sorry i_r_machinist , you've lost me. Why have you got the modem in the mix ? It has nothing to do with a modem.

    Does your computer have 1 or 2, 9pin serial connectors on the back ? Thats where you connect the cable. Usually Comm 1 . So you have another computer or Laptop to try ? Don't try to use a 25pin serial port.

    Did you try without Mach3 running ? It could be conflicting with hyperterm.

    When you put 12volt power to the Viper you should see OK appear on the screen.

    Ok, Maybe Com3 is your modem, I think you should be using Com1.

    Set Hyperterm to Com1.

    I've tried comm1 but I can't get anything to happen. Do I need to start the hyperterm program and then plug in the viper?

    On the screen where you see AT1 and it responds with OK,
    Then look at FILE, PROPERTIES, It should tell you the COM port you are using.
    If it is different than COM1, then go to FILE and open another connection, this time instead of the default modem in the connection box, set to the COM port that is working.
    This may work.
    As I have said many times, Hyperterminal is a PITA for a general Modem program.
    It is too bad that the old Win3.1 Terminal that will run under Win98 will not run under WinXP and up.
    Way better.

    To test the comport, you can make a simple " loop back test". On the viper cable there are 3 wires Black, Brown and White. Jump the Brown and White wires (TX and RX) together and then anything you type gets echoed back on the screen. (I just tested this and it works).

    Also check if Comm 1 is enabled in the BIOS.

    Do you have an other computer you can try ?

    Al, there are also some shareware programs that are better than hyper term too.

    I couldn't get comm1 to do anything, but after reading those two last posts about 10 times, I went to device manager and found that comm1 had two drivers to chose from.

    The older driver "WindowsSerial", works great!!!! LKR popped right up!

    Now on to the next challenge. I'm on bank 0, no jumpers on x drive. No power to the motor. I key in m and get m0000s0000. I turn the motor one way and get mFFFFs0000,the other way I get m0002s0000. It doesn't matter how much I turn the motor in that one direction, I still get the same m and s values. Shouldn't this number vary?

    No, Its not reading the encoder properly. Double check the wiring. If its single ended, you need to add the 2K resistor as in the manual.
