That just makes me fell all the more confident

Will do. I plan on taking pics/posting every step of the way. I have seen a lot of build threads but it seems like everyone takes some beginning pics then gets started putting it together and forgets about it lol.

Going to order the electronics today after I get home from work.

Hi John. Welcome to the Zone and Congratulations!

    G540 only $250 here:

    http://retromationinc.com/retromation_015.htm

Keling "kits" cost the same as individual parts. You can buy things separately for same prices. I would substitute the Keling 381s for 387s. It's a better match to G540:

Don't forget current limit resistors and relays:

Just have to add something to consider:

    MicroMark is shipping the SX2:

    http://cnczone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=103714

This would cost more, but may be higher quality, doesn't need the belt conversion kit and has more powerful motor:

387's are a very close second choice to the 381's.
the 381's tend to be out of stock a lot so if the 387's are available,
go for them, you won't see any appreciable difference in the 2.

Thanks! I didn't forget the resistors and such, your site has already been bookmarked!

Thanks a lot for the tear down guide! That will make things that much easier!

I already ordered the 387 kit... I just emailed them and told them I need 3 KL23H2100-35-4B motors instead. Thanks for posting that.

Update* instead of waiting for a response I called the number in the paypal receipt and I think I woke someone up.... but she got up and changed it in the computer... so everything should be good and it should ship out tomorrow!

Welcome John! I just turn the handles, so my only thought is good luck with your project! As you have already realized, there are plenty of folks willing and capable of helping you through if you have troubles. Be sure and post some progress pics.

All true. Good steppers DO run hot, and there are plenty of 387s out there running with G540s. The hotter motor DOES run faster, and should still be well under max operating temp of 180 degrees.

On an X2, the difference won't be that much, and John has a bunch of 387s to move. On a router, the difference would be significant. The 381's ARE 1/2 inch longer than the 387s, If that makes any difference.

I just like to buy the best motor first, that's all.

Well that's good to know. I confirmed this morning that they are indeed shipping the 381's. So we are good to go there.

Also just got back from HF...

Plan to unpack and clean this weekend, and get her ready to machine some of hoss's parts. The harder parts will most likely be done on a old Bridgeport with a DRO.

Got my base station set up in the basement today, had to start by cleaning it all up. My dad should be home tomorrow so we can move the crate off the truck and begin cleaning her up.

I also got my belt drive package from Stirling Steele - good quality parts and fast shipping.

I have a question regarding the electronics.. what are the relays and resistors for? I understand how they work, but not in this application.. my dad is the electrical guy and I am more the mechanical/machining guy. But having him pull up stuff on his computer while trying to explain what some of the stuff looks like over the phone hasn't worked best

If anyone can clue me in I would appreciate it.

The resistors are for setting the current level on the G540 for the stepper motors, it's in the G540 manual.
the relays are for whatever you might want to control with mach 3, flood/mist, power drawbar, addon spindle, etc.

Good to know. That makes sense to me.

I guess I am getting confused by this kelinginc - G540WD.pdf

I'm sure once he gets home and see's it it will be easier, but right now I am stuck on the second page.

I'm sure it'll be fine though. Thanks Hoss!

just a note about the pdf, limit and home switches should all be wired NC in series so you
only need to use 1 input

I'm not that bad hoss :rolleyes

I am more talking about inputs 5-9 and the relays

    5 and 6 are outputs
7,8 and 9 are the spindle control output.
pminmo has a guide for hooking up the spindle control, pay attention to your board version #
the #'s apparently changed, hook up according to VFD GROUND, VFD OUTPUT,VFD +10VDC.

    good links!

    Thanks!

Unfortunately this weekends progress consisted of getting the box out of the truck, and the computer and counter area set up in the basement.

    Try for more this week..
