What type of power supply for my motors and driver?

I have two of these right now KL23H286-20-8B and a Gecko 203V coming to my place sometime. What kind of power supply should I have running these? I will eventually get a third motor but right now I am just experimenting.

Switching power supplies seem a lot cheaper, but can they cause problems? A simple unregulated one looks like it might work, something from AnTek perhaps. I am pretty sure I need at last 10 amps to run 3 axis with it, or do I need more maybe?

I have no idea about voltage. I have seen things about how you take 20 * V rating of the motor, but in the spec sheet there are several voltages ranging from 4.17 to 8.4... which would come out to a power supply capable of 80 to 168 volts? That seems excessive, and probably wrong. I would just like to get the best speed/performance out of the motors.

Hi bead. Welcome to the Zone!

To get the most performance out of the motors, you should wire them Bipolar Parallel. Wired that way they are 84V 2.8 motors. Best performance Voltage would be 84V, but the 203v maxes out at 80V. If you ran FOUR of the motors, you wouldn't need more than 8 Amps.

I would recommend a 72V PSU, and I doubt you'll find a switcher at that Voltage.

Perhaps some of this would be helpful to you:

Those are not the most economical motors. You could do the same thing much less expensively with a G540, some Keling 381s and a $60 48V 7.3A PSU.

    Thank you for the reply!

Do you think this would be good?

That will handle about 7A and should run 3 of your motors just fine.

What about this? Would that be pushing the Gecko too hard? Would it be able to handle 3-4 motors? The current is slightly higher. The last one said 11 amps or so, but why did you say it would only do about 7?

No and Yes. Unlike other drivers, if Gecko says it can handle 80V, it WILL handle 80V.

Silly math mistake. It IS a 11A PSU and either PSU is more than enough for your needs. The motors will run a little cooler with 70V, but a little slower also.

Ok, well with those motors for the X and Y and the 203V for the driver, I went ahead and got an 80v 12A power supply too.

Now the really dumb question, does anyone have a type of CNC machine that I could apply these parts to? I would mostly like to work on plastic and light metal such as aluminium.
