    Converting 3d models into reliefs

    Hey All!
I looking for a software or plug-in that can convert a 3d model into a relief.
Artcam jewelsmith have a very impressive tool called embossing wizard ([nomedia="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXdlhciROzs"]YouTube- ArtCAM JewelSmith 2009 - Horse Modelling[/nomedia]). But the result coming out of it is very flat. It can be great if you want to machine a coin, but I'm looking for something that will keep the 3d feeling, and will give depth to the model (maybe something like the attached images)

    Does someone have any suggestions?

Those ae very intricate cuts I hope you have a 4 or 5 axis machine because a standard 3 axis machine will not be able to do those under cuts.
As far as converting to reliefs I am sure someone will have had some experience with that as I have not.

    Thanks for replying Tom!
There are intricate, but I can mill it on my 3 Axies machine and than finish it up manually...
I tried doing the conversion manually using Maya, but it's take so much time, and and feel like a process that can be done easily by a software. I bet there are a tool out there for doing that, and if not, it should be.

That's far more detailed than any image embossing tool will ever give you. Those appear to be photos of physical models?

Imo, you have two options. Model in a 3D modeling app, or do a clay (or other medium) sculpture and laser scan it. That how the models from www.3dmodelclub.com are created.

What exactly are you trying to do?

When we talk about "3d models" around here, we generally mean digital, virtual models that already exist in the computer. Do you have models like that which you're trying to flatten somewhat to produce reliefs, or are you talking about taking a physical model and turning it into a virtual relief? If that's what you're trying to do, then yes - a 3d scanner is what you need. I sell them, starting at $1895 for a Roland Pix-4 automatic touchprobe.

If you're talking about starting with a 2d photograph and creating a 3d relief from it automatically, good luck with that - you can get a very low relief that way, but nothing like the ones in your photos. The problem is that the 3d information you need just isn't there in a 2d photo.

Zbrush is very cool, now if they had a hobbyist version (read: low cost) that would be even more cool. Not being a game designer this would be cost prohibitive for me and many other hobbyists.
    Thanks for sharing though,
    DT

ps - of course for the deep pocketed folks on the zone this is nothing.

    Bob,

As others have suggested the best way (if time spent on a project, and resulting quality) is important to you, is to have the models you described hand sculpted and then laser scanned. A lot of the software tools mentioned allow you to do sculpting, but to match the level and details a skilled and professional sculptor can do, you also need to be as good with the software as the sculptors are using their hands.

You could spend days with the right software to achieve good results, but it all comes down to what are you capable of and what is the best use of your time.

If you like to take a look at www.3dmodelclub.com you will see the level of quality you can expect and if you are interested in any particular model, let me know and I can send you a sample.

Feel free to send me an email or fill in our custom model form for a free quotation.

You are also welcome to register on our website and download some of the free models to see if they reach your expectations.

    Many thanks,

    Greg
