    Can encoders be cleaned?

I have a Centroid M15 with SEM motors and on the Y and Z axis motors they have the original SEM encoders and few years ago I replaced the X axis encoder with a Danher Controls encoder from Ajax. I recently moved my shop and seems both the Z and Y encoders stopped working as I put the Danaher encoder on the Z and Y axis motors and they work so I know it is the encoder. My question is do the encoders just need a cleaning and why would both act up at the same time? The Y axis does work on and off but I cannot trust it like that. Just wondering if the encoders can be cleaned or do I just replace them? Problem is with all the moving and no work going out money is pretty tight. I can be contacted directly at [email protected]
    Thanks,
    Glen

If it is the encoder disc that needs cleaning it can be done with a lint free cloth and de-natured alcohol, or get some lens cleaner from a local optician.
    Works well.
