Newbie - Servos and linear scales

I have a Bridgeport Series I with a ProtoTrak conversion. The machine was robbed of it's servos and linear scales before I received the mill (for free!). I want to put servos back on it and use Mach3. I am well versed with steppers but know nothing of servos. Do the servos get positional feedback from the linear scales or is the feedback acquired solely from the encoders? I just need to know whether I need to drop a lot of money on new X,Y and Z scales.

    Thanks!

There is no need for 2 measuring systems. I prefer linear encoders, but rotary[on the servo] are widely used and perfectly acceptable. Buying both certainly is a waste of money.

Servos use encoders for positioning feedback, and sometimes tachometers for velocity feedback.
