    CNC filament winder(carbon fibre)

First my apologies for posting this in the wrong forum. It really should go in the "Other Machines, but I wasn't sure how to do it"
Has anyone made a DIY filament winder?. Filament winders are numerically controlled machine that usually wind carbon fibre tows(threads) around a mandrel. They usually wind the tows in a thread like pattern back and forth as the mandrel slowly turns. Pressure tanks, fishing rods and tubing can be made using these methods. The software would be very similar to the products described on the site.

I too am interested in a DIY filament winder to make carbon fiber tubing.
Have you learned more since your original posting?

One of my pet ideas, will get around to it type things. They are 1 axis machines if they are used for making tubes and tanks. Set up a simple lathe with a speed controlled workholder on a spindle. Use a high speed carriage to feed the tows onto the work, the control of the filiament winder is very basic, tensioning and guiding the tows and impregnating them with resin is the messy part, a slender part like a fishing rod would need a travelling steady. I have seen 4 axis machines which can make boxes. get one running with glass fibre then switch to the expensive stuff like PBO, Aramid or carbon fibre.

Mandril design will test your ingenuity.

Igalla, Just curious, what has a CNC filament winder have to do with EG machine bases? Epoxy nuts? Hope Wallygator wasn't turned off. Looks like just a slip-up.

I’ve been looking also for a DIY filament winder. But I’m also interested in filament holder free standing filament spool holder. I need it for my Nylon filament. Also, has someone here also try 3D printing a spool stand?
