Thumbs up engraving not responding- please help?

Hi i just purchased a used engraving machine and cant get it to function. I have used work what already exists on the pc just for a trial as it already as gcodes set up. its a turbocnc. Ive already tried it in jog mode but machine does nothing, i have a lead to my parallel port and everything is set up ok (i think). My stepper motors lock up when switched on and get warm when its been switched on for a while, so power is getting there,it must be a error in the programing. Is there a straight forward way to see if the machine is working, ive got a manual from dak eng and followed it but still no joy. Its a proffesionally built machine and doesnt have a model number, bed size 500mm x 500mm 3 axes, hope you can help, Andy

There could be a problem with the port settings, or the port voltages.
Check the PC's BIOS to make sure it is configured as a bi-directional port.
Check the port pins voltage output for 0 volts and 5 volts.
Make sure that TurboCNC is configured correctly, that each signal pin is outputting the correct high/low signal level.

Try a different computer. Be careful, though. If there is a problem with the engraver's electronics, it could damage the computer.
